Installing any new CFW is always preferred to be done from "Recovery Menu" , normal Update from XMB would work too or may not if the existing and new CFWs have the same build number.
And yes it's completely safe, it have a Kmeaw lv2 + modified lv1 + patched loaders (same Kmeaw compatibility for Eboots <= 3.55 + ability to run 3.56 Eboots + can be used for downgrading from OFW > 3.55 using hardware flashers + 4.21 spoof to bypass PARAM.SFO warning messages and update notifications)

Is there any way to install the relevant patches to allow 3.56 eboots, without needing to flash new firmware? I already have Kmeaw, with a TON of games and custom files installed, both PSN games and Backups for Multiman. Having to reinstall all that would after a Firmware reinstall be a huge pain.

Underball, unless you are actually downgrading your console, (using a dongle to put you in service mode) you will not lose all your games or the majority of your settings. With any update of course there is a tiny chance of losing data, but think of it as a Windows Update, you'll get his few extra features added, without losing anything.

So should I run it as a regular update from the XMB, or boot into recovery menu and install it there?

I thought loafing a new firmware from the recovery menu formatted the harddrive every time?

Turn the Ps3 into Recovery Menu again --> Last Option: System Update --> install Kmeaw or any other CFW
