@Mistawes

Thanks for the script! Amazing start!

I believe zipping the saves is counter-productive. It will prevent users from sharing their saves. The save folders should be exactly the same has on "dev_hdd0/home/0000000X/savedata/".

Code:
PS3Dropbox
|
--->00000001/savedata
|
--->00000001_resigned
|
--->00000002/savedata
|
--->00000002_resigned

Can you share saves? does that rely on the user (00000001) being the same on both consoles? I have never game shared

If you took a closer look at the app mockup. You would understand.

Example:

1. A user does not rely on 00000001. If he/she has more than one PS3 account, he/she could select for the App, which account to "Sync up to Dropbox"

2. A use could set the default PS3 account. Hence He/She does not have to switch everytime. When the user sets the "default PS3 account" the app also set the default path for both "Sync up to Dropbox" and "Sync down from Dropbox"

3. You can't really share save. The only way is changing console ID (Resigning) and transferring it via FTP/MM. This is where "0000000X_resigned" folder comes it. Download from gamefaq, other forums. Or even users use PS3Dropbox who have shared their saved. All you could is resign the saves via your preferred HEX editor. Copy them to "0000000X_resigned" PS3Dropbox would read the folder and will copy it to its own folder. When you perform "Copy resigned saves to user acc", it app will copy it to the default account.

Well this is the app concept that I thought off.

Good idea, and actually sounds quite easy to make If showtime has dropbox support that would also mean the required APIs from Dropbox' side to do it, would be available

There is only one slight problem and that is with the sharing of gamesaves. Dropbox does allow you to upload and to share your files, but they do not allow you to use them as a hosting service. Excessive use of bandwidth in the downstream direction (as in, your file is being downloaded in unacceptable amounts, which indicate its being used as a hosting service for file sharing) will either get your account closed, or limited so its unable to share public files/download. Perhaps an excessive amount of connections, as in a lot of different users are connecting and downloading the files, is something that they monitor as well.
Sadly I do not know their thresholds for when they raise their flags.

People use Dropbox for all sorts of syncing application, storage stuff. There are tons of apple/windows/android/iphone apps that relies on dropbox. I don't think it will be much of a problem. I don't think it will require excessive bandwidth. PS3 Game Save are small files. From 1 MB - 10 MB. I believe it will be fine.

Nonono, I know. And the app is indeed smart and sounds simple to make, had I had my own PS3 I would gladly have started :P I did not mean for personal use.. If you use dropbox to share files in a file hosting way, then you break their rules Not just if you use it to sync stuff.

Maybe I understood your initial idea wrong. I understood it as others should be able to download a repertoire of game saves(due to being able to see and download others' gamesaves) through dropbox as well then.

Nice to hear your thoughts and view. Actually my initial idea is for syncing. Syncing is the primary function. But secondary should be sharing, as it is one of the perks that comes with dropbox or any cloud services.

If this app see the light of day, I believe other cloud service can be added.

I agree that some folks don't like to store their saves online. The app could also offer local FTP Lan Sync too.

FTP server

If there is a FTP server needed: I could make one for you with... Let's say: 450GB HDD space ?

ofcourse for free. Unlimited downloads, only thing is the download speed from the server. I will host it on a VPS but limit the speed to 1 MB/s upload from the server... (so your max. download would be less than 1MB/s)

But it's free... So if you want, say it ! I'll make it !
