You have to use a flasher, there is no software method. Also you can mess up your HDD if you formatted it in a PC.

online mods you have to data transfer to host almost 99.9999% of the time, to data transfer you need 2 PS3s one on 3.55 one on latest (4.21 at this point in time) and jailbreak your 3.55 with mods on it than data transfer to your 4.21.
