Something is stuck. You need to remove the top of the Drive and check and see what happens when you stick a disk in.

Check the 4 ribbons that connect from the Logic board to the drive.

you could try this video tutorial PS3 loader alignment the HARD way - YouTube

i tried it once, but it's a bit tricky, maybe if you are lucky the rest of the drive works properly...downside you can't eject, because that part is not working.

well i tried doing what the video says and now its not spinning, i also messed the insertion tray up when i expanded them like in the video.(The gears fell out) And i dont know how it goes back together...Ive heard buying a cobra dongle lets you play disc games discless and that converting to DEX also allows it...Maybe these are my only options?

I have the same problem with a phat PS3.

New drive, same problem.
Changed ribbon and power wires, same problem.

It's not the drive or the cables, and is driving me nuts.

I got it cheap off ebay, and I can see it has been reflowed before. I think whoever reflowed it, messed up something on the mobo that controls the drive? IDK?

It has to be one of the ribbons or cables From the logic board to the BD Drive. Like I said to the OP Open up the drive, Hook it up open, And see what it does when you try to insert a disk. I had a messed up gear in mine that I moved and it worked fine after.
