Ps3 60 gb HELP
I bought an 80 gb ps3 but i received a fu**ing 60gb anyway i have to keep it... It's a 60 gb CECH04 with an 80 gb hd...
Cause i have an YLOD on one of these in the past i decided to open it and clean it... When i tried it without changing the thermal paste it seems the fan doesnt work too much but ps3 went really hot faster... Now i've changed the thermal paste (that was in really poor condition) with a silver one and it seems a jet while taking off... Tha fan goes in the third velocity for what i've understood. I applied the thermal paste in small doses putting on everytime the fan and pressing it until the paste cover all the plate... I think it's right tell me if it is or not... Anyway for cool it better can i make some extra whole maybe where is the fan it could help? Thank you |

Paste takes time to cure I used artic silver in the past and didnt like it because it took forever for it to cure I used ceramique 2 you can buy it at radioshack anyways iv spent alot of time messing around with my paste I bought alot of it to find the right amount to put on what I did was upgrade my fan to a 19 bladded fan I spread the paste over the cpu and gpu then put a small dab on all 4 corners and one in the middle after that put it back together if you have a fan at night put the fan in the window put your ps3 up in front of it with the back facing the fan and leave it there over night it will help cure it alot faster after that it should be alot better as long as it doesnt jump to the 3rd stage in one to two minutes then you should be good hope that helps again iv spent weeks messing with my ps3 so I know what im talking about good luck

Sounds like you don't know what you're doing for applying the paste and used way too much.
For computer CPUs you need a "rice grain" amount of paste, not sure of surface area of the one in the PS3 for the CPU but it will be a similar size. The graphics chip will be bigger though. Anyway, it's not going to help you. All 60GBs are doomed and YLOD at this age in their life is just a matter of when, not if. Changing thermal paste won't make a jot of difference because it's not CPU\graphics chip overheating that is causing the YLOD but solder joints from heat in the PCB, yes, thermal paste will reduce the heat to the PCB but not by any significant amount to make any difference at all. If you insist on doing it anyway, might as well since you've given it one go then use a tiny amount and spread with a credit card to create a thin film, then apply the heatsink\fan back on. Too much is far worse than not enough. Also, BS about arctic silver taking forever to cure, it takes a couple of weeks of use for a couple of hours a day to fully cure but temperature differences from when not cured -> cured are minor, we're talking a 2-3c absolute maximum. Which is nothing relatively speaking. If you're dubious about my views, then go and check out some dedicated computer forum where thermal paste application is discussed until the cows come home by people who actually know what they are talking about (people like me who have put together and taken apart countless computer components over the years). ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* Also regarding the "19 bladed fan", no relevance at all. The important factor is it's CFM rating which stands for cubic feet minute - how much air the fan is rated to push through. The higher the rating the better the job at cooling but the noisier it will be, larger fans need to turn slower to push through the same amount of air as a smaller fan so aren't as noisy. I don't know the size fan a PS3 takes, you can find out the size on google, it will be a standard part size. Then go to a computer parts online retailer and look for a fan of that size, it's best to spend a bit more and get one that quotes a high cfm\low volume type affair. Since the PS3 can alter the speed of the fan you will need one that has 3pins and not 2pins, one of the pins is the control for the speed\voltage. There's plenty of more specific information on google about this, just do yourself a favour and look for the links that are on computer specific forums, PS3 user forums generally full of clowns who don't have a jot of knowledge when it comes down to it. The ore strange thing that i ve not mentioned is that with his old thermal paste (that was in really poor condition it was casted out if the heatsink on the motherboard, it was pratically inexistent on the plate) it was not so louder so or it had problem with knowing the right temperature or the thermal paste i used totally suck...
I've read about the 19 bladed fan but it seems it s not really efficent i'm wondering if there is no way to put a powerful fan that could fit in can somebody tells me the dimension of the ps3 fan... EDIT: thank you @baargle i read now your post EDIT 2: before buy anything i will remove some thermal paste... After if nothing change i will take my fan and ask for a one with the same dimension in a shop... Last edited by alexsius; 08-22-2012 at 04:43 AM. |

I know this is a double post but it s too important for just be an "EDIT".
For EVERYONE who hass the fan problem trust me put really few thermal paste (if it is silver-based) enough for cover all the plate when arranged on with a plastic card... My ps3 as i boot a game started on tier 3 fan speed (too thermal paste) now it ever stays on tier 2 and rarely goes on tier 3 and then when it has cooled the cpu/gpu it comes back to tier 2!! Anyway i know it doesn't prevent YLOD conpletely so i'm going to look for a powerful fan... Last edited by alexsius; 08-22-2012 at 07:49 AM. |
