I have never tried a file bigger than 4.6gb, but yes no jailbreak required. (would cinavia be an issue?)

I guess if your can put the 8gb file on a device that allows +4.6gb files AND that the PS3 can read from then you should be able to copy it off the device onto your PS3. I use a fat32 drive or DVD-RW.. so you can see why I havent tried 4.6+ gb files, plus the machine I use is CFW to get rid of cinavia.

What FS is the xperia? I would guess FAT32? FAT32 has a 4gb limit.

@Simonbuck nobody also listen to me so i'm pretty sure it's the avater.

anyway, everyone ignore's my Tsmuxer option, they do forget that it's the perfect tool for avchd's on the ps3, it will split the movie into 4GB files, you won't notice anything in playback , but you have to run it from an usb stick/hdd.

also since most avchd's have dts as audio, there's no cinavia warning.

Correction , I meant to say Akira's collection in Japanese and some Korean collections as well it'd be great if I could add subs like I do in my PC when I watch them For Nolan movies and all it won't be needed

hope i can give a clear answer.

if you downloaded an avchd movie (usually in dvd9 iso format) , you can extract the iso to your computer, use winrar to open the iso and extract the m2ts file from the STREAM folder to your computer.

for this scenario Tsmuxer works best, you can create an AVCHD movie on your usb stick to watch it on the ps3 with soft subtitles. (no encoding) and you can split the big m2ts file in 4GB parts.

the downside, you can only have one AVCHD on a stick and you can't watch it from the internal hdd as avchd, and if you are on 3.55 you can have issues.

if you downloaded mkv files, you could try mkv2vob, it can also create avchd with soft subtitles, but for avchd the movie have to be exact 1920x1080 or 1280x720. most mkv files have cropped the black bars so this could be a problem.

if you downloaded divx movies it's also very easy to add subs, just use AVIAddXSub , if you have a srt file (subs) you can add it to your divx and have soft subs on the ps3.
