Hello, I have a PS3 Slim running 3.55 kmeaw and am having trouble playing my blu-ray movies. I have been running the custom firmware for quite some time now and this is the first time I've had this problem. I have tried to play two blu-ray movies so far Royal Tenenbaums and American Psycho and with both movies I receive this error message "to play this bd you must renew the encryption key. perform a system update to renew the encryption key" Any ideas what is going on or how I can fix this? Thank you

You can't. New Blu-ray movies have new AACS keys which require latest FW. I suggest that you get a standalone Blu-ray player to watch all your movies.

I just tried playing Knocked Up and got the same error. I know I have watched that movie on my PS3 with CFW before. It's like something changed because movies that I used to be able to watch won't play anymore...

Try re-installing your CFW and after that, turn off network connection before watching your movie.

So I have now tried re-installing OFW 3.55 and still no blu-ray playback! Now I'm really confused about this problem. I can confirm that it can play DVDs fine. Any ideas? This is really strange and frustrating, I used to be able to play my blu-ray movies just fine and now I can't play any of them (new or old).

I have found this on Sony's website

"You may have to renew the AACS encryption key to play content such as movies on commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM). If a message indicating that the encryption key needs to be renewed is displayed, update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed.

AACS (Advanced Access Content System) is a copyright-protection technology that is used on Blu-ray movies.
The copyrighted content is protected by setting an encryption key on both the disc and the device used to play the disc.

An AACS encryption key expires in 12 to 18 months and must be renewed. There may also be other times when the key has to be renewed."

I'm confused for a few reasons:
1) If the AACS key expires every 12 to 18 months how come more people aren't having this same problem? Surely I'm not the only one who has been using 3.55 kmeaw since it came out.
2) How come reverting from 3.55 kmeaw to 3.55 OFW didn't renew the AACS key? Does that mean I have no other option but to upgrade to a higher firmware?

I am scared that if I bite the bullet and upgrade to the latest firmware, this blu-ray error might still occur! In which case I would be unable to play any homebrew or watch my blu-ray movies. I just don't want to lose any more compatability because at a certain point my PS3 will be useless.

You're not the only one, it has been known for months.

You can't fix it unless you can get the AACS keys from higher firmware and for that, you need keys.

Try the kmeaw 9.99 spoof it has worked in the past. I am not sure if this is something different now but it did work for movies.

I think Rebug CFW 355.2 you can turn on BluRay option playback, if you have lost it or it will automatically work i forget which is the case but try the spoof it worked the last time i told someone here. Sony are suck pricks !

@piglet And the MPAA & other scumbags wonder why people download movies with all this restrictions / region Control CRAP. Do yourself a favor figure out how to get around it .Rip the movie & learn how to convert them. It is actually a fun hobby or find it somewhere ? It is not that hard but be careful how to obtain. I would not blame you one bit on how you get the movie you paid for to watch it .I think it is wrong & this nonsense needs to stop = BOYCOTT SONY ,i have so should others if they are affected by this kind of treatment .I would never update for a movie & i watch them all day long on my PS3 ,i just get around the issues

Yeah, just get an external hdd. And rip all your blu-rays to it. I have a 3tb, for games and movies. Plenty of room.

Here's the bad news that I would like to warn anyone else who is having my specific problem about. I upgraded to 3.56 which should have newer AACS keys than my 3.55 kmeaw or rebug 3.55.2.. and STILL the same error message! So now I'm on a locked down 3.56 firmware and am still in the same predicament. Any suggestions or ideas what is wrong with my PS3? It wouldn't make any sense to go to an even higher firmware because going from 3.55 -> 3.56 should've done the trick, right? I could just pull the trigger and go to 4.21 lol

Do you have a hardware flasher to get back to 3.55?

If not, you might as well update to 4.21 and enjoy some PSN and new Blu-ray movies.

Edit - I'm off to watch my backed up Blu-ray movie, from an external hard drive, on my jailbroken PS3. My only problem is choosing which one, DEX or CEX? LOL!
