PS3_UPDATE folder in game disc/backup
hey every one!
i'm here today because all the chatter about SCETool and brute-force got me curious and this got me to confused about something that I've always noticed but never really minded because I've never updated any game I played... just declined to when asked simply because "if it ain't broke, don't touch it" so since everything ran ok, i never asked about this... Well to cut to the chase, I was attempting an eboot fix for Dirt3 (3.60 game that apparently was cracked by duplex) so anyhow, the first step of the process is updating the game and ... that's where i got stuck. every title (BLESXXXXXX or whichever) has 2 subfolders, PS3_GAME and PS3_UPDATE and based on curiosity, having checked almost every title I played, the update folder has an 256MB pup... but I went in mmCM latest ver. and tried in game settings > update... to which i got a download screen with an update to 1.01 at 22MB hence my confusion. I take it the update pup is something else entirely... I did have a look-see at aldo's tools and that made it a tad more confusing. Can anyone shed some light on the 3.60 game fixing and what that pup might be for. Many thanks |

This is just a pup for updating the firmware.
Imagine a game requires 3.70 but you don't have internet access, you can update with the disc. |

The game update is different to the system update.
Every game comes with the relevant update, that you would need to play it on OFW, in the PS3_update folder. You can delete every single one of those from your backups to save space ![]() The game update installs to your XMB under game data, and will be the 22mb file. This wont update your PS3 to 4.00 or whatever, but will update your game to 1.01 or whatever update you apply.

The .pup and the folder update is for the system, not for the game.
You can delete it if you don t wish to update your ps3 (probably you already heard about people updating the console of theirs friends by playing a game, this is it) or just gain some space. However, mostly it s 256mb but irrc there are some games with different update size ( forgot the technical term about it but it s still update system file) If you feel more curious about it, there are some tools released long time ago by kakarotok (forgot here also for which "type" of system update it was) With that tool irrc, something you can check is the FW version of it. If you still feel curious, you can check also the ps3 disc sfb and see it contain a flag to "activate" the update folder (flag as "u", activate means in the current case: ps3 is aware of this folder but do nothing without asking) So you can edit this file and remove the flag "u" if you think Sony is going to make silent update. Or delete the complete folder. About 3.60 game fix, there are different cases: regular disc game/update: you fix it by resign it, no error. If you still have an error code. here come the others cases: game who need to be more "fixed" because of sys proc param ( hexa edit it+resign) If you still have error (probably more look like freeze, back to xmb etc..) so you will need to fix (as resign) something else than eboot: sprx , self ... (and need to use the tools for K license , there are a manual way much more shorter than brute force but you will need to be really familiar with specific tools/ format file) Also the SFO need to be edited as 3.41 (e.g.) in the case of update fix otherwise you will need to use spoof (from a fix for disc, MultiMan can edit it for you) Last edited by Ada Love Lace; 08-23-2012 at 09:58 AM. |

&
@Ada Love Lace
thank you guys for the info...
it makes total sense now... i had seen pups around and toyed with different ones for cfw purposes, just never considered the update would be placed on disc... (evil evil $ony) good tip!!! i'll removing a few update folders ![]() @Ada: i know most game fixes are practically out... heck i've found a torrent that has most ones i've been reading about!! exciting! still I'm just curious to know about this manual technique for my self satisfaction ![]() I was reading about Asure/Aldo's KLicense Tool, won't post link as to not offend and cause me trouble... i'll just paste the instructions Instructions on use - Install your 3.60 game updates: - if game just uses an eboot, copy that eboot into the program directory and run eboot_fix.bat) - if game has self and/or sprx files too copy the eboot and all sprx/self files into the directory and run BruteForce.EXE. It has some klicense files stored already and will decrypt and resign everything automatically. If it doesn't have the klicense stored it will bruteforce the klicense for you. It can take anywhere from a couple minutes to over an hour - It just depends on how long it takes to find the klicense - After everything is resigned copy/ftp the newly resigned eboot/sprx/self files to the proper place in dev_hdd0/game/**GAMEID**/... and that's all using SCETool as I've come to understand I'm trying to fit your instructions to these ones... because i've seen some posts about hex editing the unencrypted elf files to change a value to 34 (most cases i believe) just unsure how that fits together maybe i'm just combining something i shouldn't be but rather choose one or the other? Ask how Nintendo do theirs (crash/brick/mandatory/region) update system (my character is Nintendo but in a way i betray for Sony) Or even Microsoft ( they wait for the user is sleeping to update in secret the console dvd Fw by using Kinect or during a party at midnight with their latest protection ap25 or some name similar) Sony don t do secret or mandatory update (even they can easily by asking AIBO or PocketStation from infra Red to do it) , not in PSVITA also (AFAIK) but only suggest to do. Microsoft being also notorious to ban per wave without any real valid reason (or to push you to buy other console for online). They also asked IBM to force Sony to remove otherOS and they also forbidden Sony to have Cross Chat voice ( because they have pattern the "idea"). Microsoft also forced Sony to remove the PS2 compatibility (because of their secret association with Time Warner who was the chair company at that time for DVD consortium and later got their apps on xbox live) I might be wrong about Microsoft (i don t have their console) and may be it s even more evil than that. (it s end of joke, and i have to admit xbox360 is decent machine for really good price) In a serious note, probably the hexa edit part is now automatically done by some nice tool. |

All big companies do this to each other, its how it works.. or at least how it's been the last 20 yrs or so but anyways as you said...
unfortunately for dirt 3, this didn't work for me... i updated the game, grabbed the eboot and patched it, renamed original and slapped on the fix... now the game doesn't hang like it used to, actually it used to error out, error xxxx1007 i believe... now it just asks to upgrade to 3.60. i need to find a tutorial and if i can't find one, i guess i'll have to learn to write one up! i'd appreciate it if u got any links |
