slim won't turn on

ps3 slim 160gb.
press power button red light turns green for 1 second then no lights. no fans come on during this process.

ordered a new power supply and new one does same thing.

tested the new power supply in another ps3 slim and it works.

i saw a few threads about this particular problem but this one does not have any pots inside the power supply.
i saw another thread where someone jumped pin 1 and 3 on the white 4 pin cable from the power supply to the motherboard. I tried that and then i get no power at all.

not sure where to go from here.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

the problem just appeared? or did you took the ps3 apart to do some stuff.

the ps3 is a very complicated machine, and although there are schematics for the fat one even then it can be a pain in the ass.

your problem sounds like the power just cuts off when you are powering on the ps3, like a bad connection.

in standby there's only a little current so a bad connection would work ok, but would fail when turning on the ps3.

it can ofcourse also be a hardware faillure, i'm not an expert.

thanks for the reply

not my ps3 slim. it is a 9 year old's. it was never opened and thus never tampered with and has never been modded.

he brought it to me to see if i could fix it. i do a lot of repairs on various systems and have seen this problem in the past and it was the power supply so that was the first thing i did order a new one.

when it arrived and i tried it and it still didn't work i tested it in my own ps3 (which i had to open for the first time and wasn't happy about that)
the power supply i received is in fact working fine so it has to be something else.

just looking for any suggestions. i do have a multimeter but i don't know where to begin testing voltage on the board.

He's probably lying out of his ass. If he just recently bought that and it didn't work out of the box, he'd return it based on his retailer's return policy and product warrancy. He wouldn't seek help from someone he'd have to pay for the repairs.
Ask him did he do anything dubious to it, like spill liquids on it, store it in a moist place, or store it in extreme temperatures. If it wasn't opened (I judge that by your vocational expertise, you'd be able to tell by the seal), then it must've been an environmental cause.

he didn't recently just buy it. he has been using it since last December. and before i offer to try and fix anything for anyone i make them call the mfg to verify that there is no warranty so i am not voiding anything or damaging something that can be fixed for free. he was playing a game and it shut off. he isn't lying for sure, he is a nice kid very shy. he isn't paying for anything other than parts if it is fixed and if not i will eat the cost of the psu for it so he has nothing to worry about.
there is no physical damage or liquid damage at all. was in use in his air conditioned living room and plugged into a surge protector the whole time.

it is to me an issue of power i just don't know what i should be looking for.

i know if i play with it for long enough i will get it working unless the board is done for but i was hoping to have it back to him before the weekend so i could get his mother out of my hair with the calls.

Is there a Warranty Sticker? If it says VOID all over the place it means he's been messing with it. +if it's gone he's definitely messed with it

Anyway, make sure the switch is on for the PS3 Power Adapter thingy :P

you must have a typo there.

anyway there are schematics for the 60, 80 GB fat ps3 version, i know it's not the slim, but the majority of the ic's are hopefully the same.

for the fat ps3 ic 4002 (CXR713120-202GB-TL) , controls the standby to on part, if the standby led is going off that ic must have lost power.

in all other cases like the 12v won't come on the standby led would not go off, but probably blink.

the power supply delivers +5V and on the mainboard there's a regulator that creates 3,3V out of the +5V for ic 4002 to work.

for the fat the regulator type is NCP511SN33T1G (ic 6005)

again all this info is for the fat ps3 so it might be useless.

I have also been experiencing a very similar problem with a used PS3 slim model. When first plugged in, the standby light comes on normal. When the power button is pressed, the green light will come on and it sounds as if the system fan is attempting to start for a brief period, then it cuts out. No standby light. If I press the power button again, the standby light will come back on, then the same thing again as before. Also, the eject button pressed causes 3 beeps, and it will not take a disc. I apologize if any of my issues are covered elsewhere, but a google scour returned only this post with any similarity.

Myself and a few other repairers I know have the same problem. Its not the power supply or any of the onboard fuses. One person did say he repaired on by replacing the southbridge (cxd9963gb). Ive done a reflow on the SB but it made no difference. I don't have any scrap slims (only a pile of phats) that I can remove the SB from either.
