Always get launch model before their features gets removed to bare minimum. Buy it and don't open the box till it gets jailbroken. It could be 4-5 years.

I thought the said PS3 would have lifespan about 10 years. And I think consoles are trying to be more like PCs now. It's not like before when you bought PS2 you did that to play games you couldn't on PC. And I also think that I won't be buying next gen consoles. I'l stick with high-end PC.

The PS3's lifespan will still last ten years -- even if the PS4 is released in the next two years. They never said the PS4 would not be released in the middle of everything. PS4 games will likely have PS3 ports, just like the PS2 for a brief moment was receiving games that were also on the PS3 (multiplatform, obviously). Regardless, the PS3 will be supported for years to come.

Each Sony console has been supported for ten years. PS1 and 2. Support does not mean they won't introduce a new console.

Buy two. Keep one unopened and play the other. When the slim comes out sell the used one and buy a slim.

I thought Sony believed in a 7 year life cycle.

I don't want next gen, unless you can have homebrew. The reason I got a PS3 in the first place was for OOS and linux, and they took it away

Homebrew makes the console for me. (although that rule goes completely out the window with N64, its the exception to the rule.)

The Xbox 360 proves we need next gen. (FF13 - 3 Discs, RAGE - 3 Discs, LA Noire - 3 Discs, etc...)

The PS3 can barely handle games like Skyrim due to memory issues, and on top of that the system is generally a difficult system to develop for.

The Wii is self-explanatory. Developers aren't taking advantage of it and its library is 90% shovelware. I feel sorry for Wii-exclusive gamers.

No, Sony uses the 10 year life cycle fact as a selling point.

I must have been thinking of time between console releases being roughly 7 years.

PS1 1994 - PS2 2000 - PS3 2006. (6 years give or take per region)

PSP 2004 - PSVita 2011
