@AndyTime
If a game will run discless it means you may start it via the /app_home/PS3_GAME redirect. If a game will not run discless it means you must start it via the disc symbol. You will only get the disc symbol if the disc in the drive can be verified as a valid PS3 Game BluRay. Everyone here has suggested that you should get an unscratched game, so you can rule out if your problem is resulting from a broken disc drive. So either borrow, rent or buy one and check if the disc symbol appears. If it does not, read up on cleaning or replacing the lens in the drive. @heywhosjake I don't have a Cobra Dongle so I don't know if it actually makes a disc symbol appear that can be used to get around the disc requirement. But even if it does I doubt they integrated the debug BDEmu into a normal firmware. My guess would be they simply found a way to patch the disc verification. So it will work regardless of the state the actual drive is reporting. |

Interesting to know.
And what does the disc symbol say per default? Is it a fake mounted executable of some sorts? Or just the symbol which gives a SCE Error if executed without mounting a game there? What happens if a disc is inserted, does it show up as a second disc symbol or does it just replace the fake disc? From experience with a broken drive I can say for certain that if you get the drive to verify a disc just once the disc symbol will remain in XMB as long as the PS3 doesn't get shut down or rebooted. In my case I kept a backup mounted so it could not even try to load icon0 from the disc and fail. Of course this is not a good permanent solution, unless you steal electricity from somewhere. -_- That's why i'm pretty sure the cobra dongle just fakes a disc verification on system start. But we'll only know for sure if someone actually reverses the dongle. |

To be exact, the Cobra dongle makes the disc symbol appear only when you mount a game on mmCM. So no error message if ran, obviously.
If a disc is put in, it would stay the same (show the mounted game, no second disc icon), though I'm not 100% sure about that, maybe it does replace the mounted game with the disc game, I can't test as I don't have a Cobra or CFW PS3 anymore, but it definitely doesn't make a second disc icon appear.

In that case disc verification isn't triggered at boot but instead it's either triggered by
the remapper syscall (35 or 36 on normal CFW) or afterwards by a seperate syscall. Since multiman obviously has a special version for cobra both scenarios are plausible. In any case the syscall responsible for verifying the disc type and mounting it to xmb must have either been altered or recreated as a custom syscall. My guess would be the second option, since the first might cause problems when loading different disc types. (CD/DVD/BDMovie) Or maybe I'm way off and the dongle just elevates the metachlorian count of the PS3. |
