Any reason I shoulden't just restore the entire home directory after backup?

So, I performed a backup in order to upgrade the HDD on my PS3:
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?p=425778

I have several user accounts on my PS3, and on top of trophies I am worried if my games will be de-activated or anything else gets changed/lost. So I used the multiman file manager to copy the entire home directory on dev_hdd0 to the backup drive too.

That being said, is there any reason why after I put in the new HDD and restore the backup that I SHOULDEN'T just copy the entire home directory back, overwriting any files? Will any of the data in home be changed when restored to a new HDD from backup and thus overwriting is could cause problems?

Not a good idea. From my experience, don't have to copy the entire dev_hdd0. You only need to copy your home folder. After you have done your restore using the backup utility, copy back your home folder. After that perform "Rebuild Database" in the recovery mode. Your trophies and saves should working as usual.

I never said manually backing up the entire dev_hdd0, I said the home directory in the hdd0.

Someone suggested to me to make a copy of the home folder before and after the backup to see what, if anything, changed.

So, despite the new home folder having thousands of files less and being 1/4th smaller than the old one..... and me having multiple accounts for myself, my friends, and different regions on my ps3.... pretty much it was only the trophy directories for the accounts that had earned any that was not present in the new home folder (and the data in two temp files for my main account, CI.TMP and PTL.TMP in the "community" folder) were the only differences. EVERYTHING else was present and an exact binary copy. Considering ow trivial it is to backup/restore trophies if you have CFW and ho the backup manager flat out says it won't backup trophies, it seems like Sony on purpose programmed the backup feature specifically to not do trophies for some reason.

@Cyber Akuma

Speed reading can have its down side. Sorry. I over looked your "home folder' in your post.

Trophies are not restored. ($ony may have thousands of reasons for doing that but it is still stupid. )
Copy-protected saves are not restored if I am not wrong.

Got this from other forum long time back. I hope it helps you.

The instructions below are for people with 2 PS3's (on 3.55 CFW)

You must already have your account & gamesaves restored on your other PS3 using the Backup Data Utility.
  1. Start Blackbox v1.2, then start your PC's ftp server. (You can also use MM)
  2. Go to /dev_hdd0/home/your user id/
  3. Copy the trophy folder inside to your PC
  4. Turn off your PS3, then turn on & start Blackbox on your OTHER PS3 and the ftp server on your PC.
  5. Go to /dev_hdd0/home/your user id/ again and overwrite the trophy folder with the one you backed up to your PC
  6. Turn off the ps3. Turn it back on, but instead of booting it normally, go to the Recovery Menu.
  7. Select Rebuild Database, then the ps3 will reboot afterwards.
  8. Check out your Trophy Collection and all of your trophies will be there!

The instructions below are for people upgrading to a bigger HDD

You need to have your account & gamesaves backed up to an External HDD using the Backup Data Utility.
  1. Start Blackbox v1.2, then start your PC's ftp server. (You can also use MM)
  2. Go to /dev_hdd0/home/your user id/
  3. Copy the trophy folder to your PC
  4. Turn off your PS3, and hit the switch in the back (fat ps3's only) then unplug all the cables.
  5. Take out your current HDD and put in the NEW HDD you want to use and reformat it when prompted.
  6. When finished, go to the Backup Data Utility, and then restore your backup data.
  7. After it finishes and reboots, install Blackbox v1.2 and start it, and the pc's ftp server.
  8. Go to /dev_hdd0/home/your user id/ and overwrite the trophy folder with the one you backed up to your PC
  9. Turn off the ps3. Turn it back on, but instead of booting it normally, go to the Recovery Menu.
  10. Select Rebuild Database, then the ps3 will reboot again.
  11. Check out your Trophy Collection and all of your trophies will be there!
