I am having a problem with my hard drive . please read. I tried 4 different used hard drive it come up to 99% and hold the update install would not go any further . All the hard drives came from all ps3 . I am thinking on getting a new hard drive but i don't know for sure if that can fix the problem please redirect me . :? I did each time for 2 hours and still nothing . I am thinking I must have to flash the nand chips somehow . What you guys think I should do ????

give us some more info to work with. What model ps3? what firmware where you on, and what firmware where you trying to go to? Did the hard drives you have work on other consoles? Are you sure everything is hooked up correctly, like the blue ray drive?

OK, so you bought it as a broken unit. Then when you turn it on, it automatically goes to updating system software? Hmm....does it go to the ps3 screen and then pop up and say this? Did it do this from the get go, or after you formatted the hard drive? Is this the original hard drive that you know of?

That is correct. yes i think it is the original hard drive. Only screen that pops up is the system updates screen it's goes to 99% and hold and do nothing . and when i put another hard drive in it's just turns itself off . I been told by sony support . the nand have to be flash and I can't use the e3 flasher on it because it only works on the nor system chips correct ?
my only option to buy a brand new drive for $45.00 if that don't work i have to mod it to get rid of the bad files in it ?

You are correct about the e3 flasher. It is for nor consoles, unless you solder the e3 linker in. I think you can use the e3 linker on NAND, but I am not 100% sure. That site you linked to me in the pm said that he changed the power supply for this issue and it usually works. It doesn't make sense that the console just shuts itself off if you use a different hard drive. The firmware is stored on the NAND 100%, so it shouldn't be a problem. Ideally it should finish the update just checking to make sure there is a hard drive, and then after the update it would come up and say this hard drive needs to be formatted. It could be the 3.56 bug, but that was caused by changing hard drives or fully formatting the original hard drive while on 3.56. I will try and help you by looking around for things it could be. I have hit a bump.

yea i might have to use like a Progskeet flashing the nand but i want to do that with my last resort can Progskeet can fix the red screen of death on a nand system . because it almost the same as e3 flasher ?
edit
I also been trying find ways to fix the for at least 2 months now . I had no choice to ask here .

Rsod are pretty tricky. Some can be fixed and some can't. I currently have 3 rsod consoles at my house I have been playing with. If it is a NAND console that has rsod, then you have a better chance of fixing it, because it is more than likely a flash issue, not a hardware issue. On the consoles I have, it seems to be a bad sector in the nor chip, so I can flash them with my e3 flasher, but the rsod eventually comes back. Progskeet would definitely fix the update loop, because you can get bios dump, patch it and then reflash it. Have you tried a new power supply like that one guide said to do? Other than that I am out of ideas. It doesn't go into recovery mode?

@jamesnesc709 This will probably be worth a shot

BRICK TYPE #3 of 3
*** 99% freeze loop - Gets to 99% and just sits there looking dumb!

Answer: Either your HDD is damaged or has a bad boot sector, or the reset signal on your motherboard is not working.

Fix: Try another power supply, seems to work in my cases, or replace the small eject/reset/power board in the front of the motherboard. (If HDD, see below)

IF ALL ELSE FAILS

And the FINAL answer, if all the above fails, normal due to bad download via wireless, or hdd corrupts the update, in these cases you will normall see fails at 10% or 20%, and for sure before it reachs 50%, in ALL cases, kiss this HDD goodbye, and your save files, because if you try again with SAME HDD you will be back in a loop, and need to redo the below FIX again:

The for sure FINAL un-brick fix (if all the above fails on your unit):

#1: Remove the looping HDD, and throw it away!
#2: Disassmble your PS3, and unplug the battery!
#3: Find another PS3 HDD that is from working machine which is using the same firmware that you WERE using before!
#4: Wait about 30 minutes for the removed battery to drain from your PS3.
#5: Reassemble your PS3
#6: Turn on your PS3 with the new HDD, BUT GO RIGHT AWAY into RECOVERY!
#7: At recovery menu, pick ONLY option "RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM" (i think #5)
#8: Answer all the appearing prompts, for lang./date/time/internet, etc.
#9: You now should have a working PS3 again running on the older firmware

At this stage, you can decide to try the update again, but if it fails, again you need to throw away the HDD, and get another one, or use your PC to ZERO-FILL it to get back into the recovery menu, after setting up the ZERO-FILLed HDD on another older firmware PS3.
