My dealings with DRM and Square Enix

So I was excited that there was a rerelease of one of my favorite games this year. Square-Enix had put out an updated Final Fantasy 7 for the PC. I couldn't help but purchase this game. Without looking into what I would be getting myself into I made a blind purchase. Sadly I am now at the point where I am out of my money, and the game is unplayable.

I recently acquired a copy of Windows 8 RTM via my college's MSDN AA account. I decided to install it and give it a try. After about a week I realized I was dealing with something worse than vista. I reinstalled Windows 7.

So Win 7, Win 8, back to win 7 is 3 activations. They are claiming I activated it 4 times and the game is unable to activate. I have contacted the company provided on my receipt, and was basically told I was screwed. Here is a copy of the last email I got from SecuROM

"Hello.

Thank you for your e-mail.

It appears that you have exceeded your activation limit. Unfortunately, we are unable to increase your activation limit and have been advised by the software publisher to direct users with these inquires directly to them.

You can find a list of publishers by clicking on the following link:
https://support.securom.com/faq_nsr.html

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Best regards,

SecuROM Support Team
SecuROM on the web: http://www.securom.com or via e-mail: support@securom.com

*** Please include the subject line exactly as written above including your ticket number in all communications to ensure proper handling ***"

If you look at the link you will notice Square-Enix isn't listed. I was smart enough to know Eidos is owned by Square Enix, but most consumers do not know that. So now I am trying to battle it out with Square Enix through email. To make matters worse they have a live chat option and phone support option, but in order to access either you have to copy/paste your DXDIAG information into a text box, only to have their site tell you it is invalid so that you cannot continue. I know Square-Enix is evil, and I know DRM is evil, but I figured I would rant a little bit about my experiences dealing with Square and secuROM. Why does it matter how many times I activate if it is on the original purchasing PC?

To make it all that much better, theit FAQ states that a format of an HDD also erases activation data, therefor freeing up that activation slot.....I did fresh installs each time I changed the OS.

Point being, stay away from Square-Enix, stay away from anything that is handled by secuROM, and don't waste your time with Windows 8 either. Even after I get that **** off of my machine, it is still causing me headaches.

Exactly why communities like this exist. Damn shame I actually go and purchase something to support developers, only to turn around and get shafted, but I would expect no less from Square-Enix.

Half a day later it is resolved. Square Enix had me contact Digital River and I almost lost it (look at DigitalRiver and BF3). They rest my activations without issue. Now to mod it again (PC rerelease has terrible BGM)

Update: Turns out I should have just acquired the 1998 version anyway I have to convert my 2012 version to the 1998 version to get all of the awesome mods to work. Texture packs FTW

They don't leave you much choice, crack it shall be.

The only ones they should blame, are themselves for the limitations.

You're a moron OP basically.

SecuROM are the distributor of the protection system, it's got FA to do with them. It's down to Eidos\SE and if you can't contact them your a moron again.

Well considering Square told me to contact them, then to contact digitalriver, then I was told there was no solution 3 different times before getting it fixed, I would watch who you are calling a moron before I make you look dumb. SecuROM DRM is the problem....

Can you not read I got the issue resolved or were you too busy calling me a moron to realize that you couldn't ****ing read you dumb ****. Here I will type it out for you again

Also I had no problem contacting them, I said Live chat seems to be busted since it reads all DXDIAG information as invalid. They require that from you so they can basically tell you it is a problem with your system while trying to ram it in your ass. Doesn't mean you cant google a phone number. Once again read below

I would highly recommend reading posts, not skimming, otherwise it makes you look like the moron.
