Before PSJB, we had Emulators running via OtherOS and via Swap magic on the GameOS.
Before PSJB, we had PS2 Backups, running via the switch method, or Via Swap Magic/USB Loader.
Before PSJB, we had homebrew games via BD-J, until Sony blocked that, the only option back then was to buy a BD Drive, blank BR discs and place your 1MB homebrew game...
We had all the above, whilst being on the current firmware, with access to OtherOS and PSN(apart from BD-J).

Once Sony stole OtherOS and PSJB was released, we had all that in improved segments, with the addition of PS3 backups and PSP/PS1 backups(Via Cobra).

This is the same as the PS Vita, we have everything/emulators/homebrew/PSP backups, once the Vita gets properly hacked, we will have exactly that with the addition of PS Vita backups.

So really things have not changed that much

limited otheos emu with crippled hardware support, very rudimentary emus

vs

full versions of most top emus with full hardware support and heaps of bells and whistles

--

playing region restricted discs and m2ts files

vs

playing every video and audio format known to man

--

ruining your hardware by ejecting discs while being read and opening the console and taking it apart voiding any warranty

vs

loading multiman

--

running games via a slow, expensive bd drive

vs

running games off a fast, cheap hdd, all in one place

--

imo things have changed a lot

I think you did not see the words "improved segments",meaning what we had before, but better.

So in reality, things didn't really change that much, they improved and evolved.
