Odd PS3 hdd problem (periodically doesnt detect HDD)

Hi dear friends,

I was offered to buy a PS3 slim 320GB version for around 60e.
It, however, has the problem that periodically the PS3 HDD is not detected, and the PS3 needs to be rebooted to and then with some luck, the hdd is detected. I don't know about the frequency of the problems sadly.

anyway, has any of you any idea what the problem might be, and have any of you heard about it before?

I figured I could just format the HDD, but it might be a HDD failure - I don't really know... I have spare 2.5" 120GB SATA HDD lying around, I could just use in it instead, but again.. I don't know if its actually a hardware problem on the HDD.

If any of you have any idea what is going on, please ***** in :D I honestly have ****ing no idea what is going on :D

Thankxx mates :')

/duck-in!

mine did that last week, first time on my original 60gb phat ps3, although i had upgraded to 500gb.
it only happened that time, so i did not take much notice.

but it it happens again,
i will test drive, if it fails i know what the problem is, if it doesn't, i will just put a different drive in and see what happens.

if it still has same issue, even with new drive then i will be looking into it further.

Signs of a failing HDD. If you hear clicking noises from your HDD/PS3, death of your HDD is near.

Hey Pirate, thanks! Now its hard estimating whether its worth it, as it theoretically is a new slim, but not a 320GB one..

:D I think I can help you with your issue, however. Judging from pirates answer, it is not as big a problem you are having, compared to if its the stock internal HDD that starts bugging
Your problem, since you inserted your own HDD into the playstation 3, is probably that your HDD as standard is running SATA II which runs at 3.0 Gbit. The onboard SATA controller on the PS3 can only run SATA I, which runs at 1.5gbps, so you would have to change the jumper on your hdd, to run at SATA I, no big deal
