So, yesterday I successfully fixed my friends Ps3 that had got ylod. It was my first time trying and I was glad it actually worked, I used the gilksy tutorial on youtube.

So today, I was playing battlefield 3 on my system and since my Ps3's fan has been kicking in really loud lately I thought I'd replace the thermal paste to prevent my Ps3 from the dreaded ylod.

I took the ps3 apart,cleaned out all the dust and removed the old crappy crusted Sony thermal paste.I applied Arctic silver 5, just like I did yesterday on my friends ps3. A really thin layer and then put the ps3 back together.

I turned it on and everything seemed fine but just when I reach the user sign-in the fan goes haywire and the ps3 shuts off.Tried 2 times but fan kicks in and then shuts down. What the hell did I do wrong??

EDIT: Oh yeah, I just remembered. One of the small thermal pads broke in half while I was clening it from dust,is it possible that chip is not properly "protected" since it's now only got a half thermal pad?

probably.......

did you also bend the 2 clamps that hold the cooling plates a little more to put more pressure on it?

Figured it out, I hope. I opened it up once more and apparantly the paste didn't make contact with the heatsink. I have an 80 gig whle my friends ps3 was a 40 gig so they look totally different inside.
Anyway, I first did the "even spread" over both chips but like I said, no contact with the heatsink.
I then cleaned it all off and applied 2 small chunks in the center of the chips and pressed down a bit so it would make contact and spread with help of the heatsink and now it works again! The fan is still medium though so maybe I should've applied even more paste to make it run more smooth.

At least it's working again, even if I had hopes the fan would run more quiet.

You only need to place a pea sized amount then spread it evenly with a credit card or thin plastic. I did the same thing and my PS3 is more cooler and it's not dead yet! going on strong for years. It's the old 60GB Model

...Actually it's a "rice grain" sized amount.

Too much thermal paste = bad.
Not spread into a smooth film = bad.

No offense OP but sounds like you're messing with things you haven't researched.

You're right, I was so happy I managed to fix my friends Ps3 and got carried away I guess without doing much research about applying new paste.

I used a very thin layer spread allover the cpu,gpu on his ps3 and that time it obviously got contact with the heatsink but when tryin the exact same same thing on my ps3, it didn't touch the heatsink. Then again he has the 40 gig and have the 80 gig model so they're a bit different.

Guess I'll buy another arctic tube and try it one more time, with a "rice grain" amount and really fine spread.

like i said before you should bend the 2 clamps more to put more pressure on the cooling plates versus the motherboard. (see pic what i mean with clamps)



if the 80GB model still use the same clamps ofcourse. , i only did the 60GB model
