Using PS3's as a render farm...possible?
Hey guys,
I'm currently investigating some options to creating a render farm. There were a few threads, around the net, that implied it was possible...but i've not encountered any concrete explanations on how to make this possible. The first step is to install Linux on the PS3. Then, for example, you can install the Mental Ray Standalone client for Linux (that should work with Maya and 3DS Max). Will this work on the PS3? Anyone tried this? If it is possible, the instructions/guide to doing so will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, r2rX

I remember openclit being used for ps3 farms. I don't know if it'll work with otheros++ out-of-the-box under 3.41/3.55, but I believe it's ready to go if you can get them all back to 3.21.

I think this is a good start:
http://ps3devwiki.com/wiki/OpenCLit or IRC on efnet.org: #ps3dev #ps3linux

not worth it, imo...
specially since the PS3's memory is sh!t, and a bad bottleneck. anyways, here's some clustering help links and other resources, including a small cluster video, good luck. http://www.ps3cluster.umassd.edu/index.html PS3 Real-time Ray-tracing - YouTube http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...GX03&S_CMP=EDU

How many PS3's you want to use and how do you want to find that amount of PS3's that are CFW ready or can be downgraded to CFW (linux)

Effing ridiculous.
...That is all ![]() The stories you have heard about using the PS3 as some massive parallel processing powerhouse are all made up for something to write in an article, hype, publicity and so forth. They were never used by the US military as stories would have you believe. ...End of the day, OP is this something you REALLY are genuinely interested in doing....or just a silly whimsical thought? ************* [ - Post Merged - ] *************
