n00b question: Why can't new models downgrade to 3.55?

Hey all,

This is a n00b question but i'm curious as to why PS3's with 3.56 v2 + preinstalled can't be downgraded.

It's more of a technical inquiry.....what is the difference/change to a PS3 with a firmware, higher than 3.55 preinstalled, that will refuse a downgrade below it's origional firmware?

Thanks.

Metldr2 and syscon afaik:

3) Datecode 1B : has new metldr2 of 63.776 bytes and fails downgrade to 3.55 with blackscreen and shutdowns in 8sec without blinking LEDs/beeps

Interesting. What would be involved in adjusting/modifying the metldr2/syscon to accept a downgrade? I am not intimately familiar with the architecture (software/hardware) of the PS3, as I am starting to read up, but if the hardware is exactly the same then the only change is the software (being metldr2 and syscon for example)...so what is the barrier to this?

Thanks for the response, guys.

We do not have the keys to Decrypt them so we cannot change them

Ahh...alright. I feel a little of a dunce right now. Thanks for the info........to potentially enhance the dunceness....is there no way to forcefully remove that data and replace/flash the corresponding 3.55 data?

The downgrade requires that the system's minimum firmware be on 3.55 or under, this is dependent on both metldr and bootdr iirc. Newer models have both software and hardware changes but its mostly due to the newer metldr and bootldr which prevents a downgrade.
