You can't go back to 3.55 without a flasher, once you update theres no way to go back to 3.55, only with a flasher.
And you can instal the 4xx cfw over the 3.55 cfw, some people do the thing that you saying instal first the ofw and then the cfw but theres no need of doing that ( i think).

First of all, it isn't sure what is new in the new 4.21 CFW (if it's real) but if it's real it will probably mean that you can play all games up to FW 4.21 without waiting for eboot fixes.

As for homebrew, it won't make a difference unless more people start creating new homebrew

If you want to learn more about the new CFW, wait till it's confirmed real cause now it's only speculation :D

Yes you can play new games up to 4.21 so basically you can play all the games of the world that exist for ps3 until today, then sony will change the keys and you il have to wait, for new fixes( eboots) or the new keys.
You il have so much games to play, but he can't talk about piracy here, sorry i hope you understand

See people, patience is the constant. No matter how much changes in any scene, patience is the only thing that will ALWAYS be needed. Let the real work get done by the pros behind the scenes and eventually you'll have something to new to play with without having to do any work yourself... You wonder why some devs leave, just read ignorant comments left by the forum members that supposedly 'support' them. You may not be able to find many contributions from me but at least you wont find me complaining and hounding for a release. Sorry for the off-topic nature of this comment haha.

On-topic: Now things have really sparked my interest, thanks to @deank for clearing up so much of the confusion/doubt. Now, After all this has been said, I myself still wont be expecting to install a 4.21 cfw any time soon.
