Holy sh1t! My ps3 came back to life using the washers trick from this thread:
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?p=102145

I only put them under the clamps of the gpu/rsx though, since that was the only one of the 2 that I removed the IHS from.
Only did a short testing but fan doesn't kick in quite as fast or hard as before.

Wonder if I should be brave and put washers under the clamps of the cpu too now that I have them under the gpu, what do you think? Might "even it out" and possibly transfer even more heat or should I just be happy that it's up and running?
I don't feel comfortable removing the IHS on the gpu since it requires more tampering with delicate parts and I guess I was just lucky not messing anything up while removing it from the rsx.

I'm sorry for updating this thread as soon as I've tried something different but I'm really happy right now and maybe this can help someone someday if ever in truoble after changing paste or so.

i was told that artic silver 5 is actually paste made directly from unicorn poops and bits of silver mixed together to make a type of "god" formula for keeping your systems chill as f*ck

I'd really appreciate someone's input on removing the IHS from the cpu that has done it. I succesfully did it on the rsx and replaced the thermal paste under it with ac5 and it sure made a difference on the temperature. Now it stays at 44.5C all the time but cpu is at 84C constant after like 10 minutes of a movie or game and fan is high so I really need to do it on the cpu as well.

If I manage to get it off with the razorblade-technique, is it important to replace the thermal silicone on the sides with new silicone or can I just use thermal paste along the sides as well? If so, what thermal silicone are you guys using?
@pereb27 , maybe you could give some valuable info on this?

Two things :

1/ You don't really need to glue the IHS back, but you need to place it properly (as in, properly centered) and use the thermal paste as glue instead (I recommend MX-4 for that, it won't move a millimeter, and to place the IHS on the heatsink itself before screwing it to the board, instead of placing on the CPU and then install the heatsink, so it doesn't move while installing it).
If you normally have the PS3 vertically, it's best to keep the PS3 horizontal for a week or so (and you have to be using it) so that the paste burns in, else you take the risk of having the IHS slide a little.

2/ You're likely to break the CPU board if your model isnt BC (they seem to use stronger silicone on the later models), though that might be fixable by repairing the cut traces, but I can't guarantee it. If you try it and notice an area is much harder to cut through, give that up, cut the rest and then try to take it off (basically just raise it from the opposite end), if most of the silicone has been cut, it should tear the hard area apart.
Heating up the CPU with, something like a hair dryer (NOT a heatgun, that's way too hot)

Also, the razorblade you use is http://www.nominedeus.co.uk/wp-conte...RazorBlade.jpg. Make sure not to go too far in or you'll reach and damage the die. Watch out for the area with the gap aswell, if you put too much force on the blade when it reaches the gap it could damage the board.

Lastly, protect your fingers and hand, else the other end of the blade will cut it :P

Thanks alot Pereb27, really appreciate your help on this since I know you have done the procedure. I have a CECHL04 80 gb non backward ps3, hopefully the silicone isn't too hard to remove on it.
I have always had it placed horizontally and it wasn't a problem when I did the RSX using only thermal paste to hold the IHS, no glue. But I had to flip the motherboard pretty fast so the IHS wouldn't move out of place when attaching it to the heatsink.
One last thing, did you remove the silicone completey from both the motherboard and the IHS or should I just apply mx4 on the old silicon that's left?

Hmm, this looks very interesting, and safer too. The main issue is making that tool I guess, but it seemed to work on that DIA-001 board (CECHH). I guess the main issue with my method is the tool used...

I FAILED miserably, the silicone on my 80gb was hard as f @cki ng rock and I finally lost my patience and temper and tried bending the last part and this is the result.
http://i.imgur.com/5XBaa.jpg

So in short, I guess I killed it because the silicone ripped it pretty good at the back.. F@CK YOU silicone and F@CK ME for losing my temper.

Guess I'm buying a new PS3, wake me up when there's a 4.21 jailbreak available.

Oh! don't try this at home kids if you don't know what you're doing, you might end up looking like a stupid F @cki NG IDIOT like me.

EDIT: The piece that got ripped off is still attached to the IHS, would it be dangerous to try and put the IHS back in place after replacing paste and try to start the Ps3 , I mean electronically safe?

why would it be electronically unsafe, it's low voltage right, the worst that can happen is that you will blow some fuses in the ps3.

Yeah dutch is right its not like your even trying to save it anymore so why not just go ahead and try cause you might be successful in the end
