Go to the ps3devwiki and look up kiosk reverters. @tjhooker73 has a link in his sig.

You will be able to convert it from kiosk to OFW 4.11+, so you will not be able to play backups or run homebrew.

Use minvercheck in my sig to figure out if your PS3 can be downgraded to 3.55, if it can you will need to buy hardware flasher (dependant on slim or phat model no) and a FSM downgrade dongle, and open your PS3 to mod it.

If your PS3 WONT downgrade to 3.55 or below according to minvercheck , then you cant run backups or HB at all. You are out of luck.

Firstly, don't ask a noob whos stuck on kiosk FW....

Secondly, run minvercheck (link in my sig) to find out if your PS3 can downgrade to 3.55 or lower.

Hey guys,

I hope you can help me, I'm a newcomer and completely desesperate.
I have read the whole tutorial, and obviously tried it, with no luck.
I've been looking into hacking my PS3 so I could test-play games before buying.

I have a Phat PS3, firmware 4.21, serial ending with CECHKxx. A soft I found (MinVer) tells me I can install firmwares up to 3.1 or 3.2 (I'm not sure but it was below 3.55).
I understand I need to be in 3.55 to jailbreak, and all my numerous attempts to downgrade failed.

I have found numerous websites including this thread, mentionning I need a flasher to downgrade.
Do I really need one, and if so, where can I get it ? I've seen several different ones, which one should I chose ?

Some websites also say I need to open up the PS3 and tweak it using hardwares... I'm not sure I'm really into this, considering I would not know what I'll be doing, I don't want to mess with the thing.


I also am a little confused with CFW, DEX, CEX, and most importantly the risks of jailbreaking the PS3.
I am not a computer geek, and these terms confuse me.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but OFW stands for original firmware, and CFW is the customed one, after the jailbreaking, that allows for unsigned packages (incl. games and various programs) to be used on the PS3. But what is DEX and CEX ?


I have found that jailbreaking might make it impossible for me to play my games on the Internet, is that true ? Also, is it true for only the downloaded games or even the originals ?



I am sorry if any of these questions have been asked before. I am new to this website and despite my attempts to look for information around the web and the website, I haven't been successful. I would be very grateful if you could please help me, and tell me what I'm doing wrong, or where I could find the information I need.

@Ovipthyo yes you really need a flasher.

E3 for NOR, or Progskeet for NAND. (most PHATS are NAND, but double check here:http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/SKU_Models#PS3_Fat )

You also need a downgrade/FSM (factory service mode) dongle.

Once you have established what you need find a relevant tutorial in the tutorials section, and once you have 3.55, then think about CFW or DEXing (although TBH I think slims (NOR) are better/safer for DEX conversion then Phats with NAND)

DEX = debug machine, CEX = retail machine, SEX = kiosk machine aka useless... (there are more but I will stop there)

PSN on CFW/DEX is not guaranteed. Sometimes we have PSN, most the time we don't, and that counts for originals and backups.

NOR and NANDS, I am not sure I know what these are, but if I have a PHAT PS3, with the serial in CECHKxx... So can I assume it is NOR ?
Your wiki says I'm 16Mb NOR.
I am not sure what it means, but it also says "NO" under the "Flash reader" column, hope it doesn't affect the ability to read the flasher I'm going to buy ?

The E3/Prosgkeet flasher, they look like things I actually need to fix on the PS3 Hardware, I thought there were devices that would be plugged in the USB...
Any chance I can jailbreak without opening the PS3 ?

Also about PSN, you're bringing bad news. When I heard about this, I quickly googled for solutions (although I haven't looked into it much), and it seems that there were some programms and stuff you could install after the Jailbreak to get PSN back, is that false ?

Basically for jailbreaking, if I understood correctly :
- I need to open the PS3, messing with the hardware
- Get a 60€+ flasher (E3, since I'm in NOR)
- Give up PSN and online multiplayer even with originals

So it's choosing between 60€ starter fee, unlimited solo games and risk of breaking PS3... or paying 40+ per game.
Tough choice !
Thought it'd be as easy as jailbreaking an iPhone.

It's a built in CARD flash storage reader. Having PSN relies on workarounds or leaked passphrases which allow us to connect to PSN/SEN. At the moment I believe PSN IS available, but it wont last long imho. Yes it does help, thanks a lot. And thank you for being patient. I can imagine most of the questions I ask seem silly for you guys.


If I do decide to open the PS3 and do all the things you described, is it something easy to do for someone not very used to mess with electronics ?
Am I going to have to sold things, and wire them together ?
What are the chances of getting a PSBrick ?
If I do manage to get everything done, is it reversible ?
And if let's say I update the firmware by error, could I just re-jailbreak it again ?
