Yes most games work on an external hdd with a disc inserted. You can however upgrade your internal hdd anyway if you wish later.

Just always do a backup first, then install new hdd.

Heres a good compatibility list to check anyway

Something to remember is that some games that are on an external still require to install some files to the ps3 hard drive so while 40GB is enough on a ps3 you will be constantly deleting game data(the installed files) to install new games. I have an 80GB and am always having to delete old game data. If you can afford a bigger hard drive id highly recommend it.

40GB PS3 is NOT enough for all games.

FFXIII for example, along with Uncharted 3, Star Ocean Last Hope, Undisputed 2010....maybe a few others.

You have to bare in mind that a 40GB PS3 will only have about 30GB of useable space because some gets reserved by then system software, then when you factor that some games need to be installed too, you will be left with even less.

You will find that there are a few more games that won't work because of this limit but those there are 4 definite that won't from internal and don't work from external because of having files over 4GB.

You could strip down the games, but as is, you will have a problem.

Be silly not to get at least a 200GB+ internal drive imo.

No 40gbs is not enough if you factor in how much music you may have and game installments on your internal hdd.

Games that have files over 4 Gb need to be on internal drive. The PS3 can't read these files from external fat32 drive. So yes it is to small...

But if the drive is the original drive you know at least the PS3 can be downgraded (with a hardware flasher) to the magical FW 3.55. Or maybe it isn't even on 3.55, even better You didn't say on what FW this PS3 is btw...

So just buy it (check serial CECHxxx first) and replace the drive yourself to a bigger one. Very easy to do, even my GF can do it
Note: downgrading with a hardware flasher is a bit more difficult, I don't let her do that

My bad i thought that was solved a while ago(something to do with splitting the files? Its been a while since ive even turned my cfw on, still on KMEAW its been that long :O ). Also like others have said its best to get a bigger hard drive. You can pick them up dirt cheap on ebay and the like now anyways.

Splitting files is purely for storage\archiving a game, if you want to play it again, then you have to join the files together and copy to internal.
