New Member needs PS3 Advice!!
Hi Guys,
I have some quick questions regarding the modding of a ps3. First off, a bit about my background, I own a Wii (modded) ps2 (chipped), and a couple of psp's (all on CFW). An Ip4s jailbroke.So, i understand the basic's, and am able to catch on quick. The thing is I have no experience with the ps3 (yet). I'm a Dad, and have done all this stuff for my Son. I want to buy my Son a ps3, (and a Vita) for Christmas this year, and am not scared to buy a used one. I'm looking through Kijiji adds, and am finding all kinds of deals, some newer slim units,and some older fat units, but don't know what to buy? What I need to know, is what am i looking for, as far as what will be moddable? What ver. Ps3 should I be looking for, and what ver. software should it have, so I can instal CFW? Also, what situation is the PS3 mod scene in now? Is it possible to make backup's at this time? Or is it possible to back up a game to HDD and have them playable? If i were to find a ps3 that meets all the critera for modding, what is the largest HDD that I could install in it? (IE: could I install a 1TB drive?). If someone could please answer all my questions here, I'd truly appreciate it, as I'm a very busy guy, and know all the answers are out there, but I really don't have the time to start from scratch, and spend endless hours reading through all the forums, so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me, as It would save me a hell of alot of time.... :-) an time is money. Thanks for everything, in advance, and all help is greatly appreciated! ginnz. |

Look here:
http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/SKU_Models You want any PS3 with model numbers from CECHA ~ CECH-251.B(*) * = Only the earlier models can downgrade to 3.55. The latter models of the 2000 and above series PS3 came with above 3.55 FW so you may not be able to downgrade it. If you're able to get more info about the PS3, this tool by @DEFAULTDNB will be useful: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=41685

If you buy a brand new one, you will be very lucky to find a hackable/downgradable one so a second hand ps3 is your best bet.
One with firmware 3.55 is ideal, if not, one that can be downgraded with a flasher is your next best option. 3k and 4k series can't be downgraded (not sure, maybe one of the other guys can confirm that) so try and get a 2k series. For the internal HD, any drive that is 9.5mm high will fit in fine. Hope that helps. EDIT: Pretty much what @alienkid said. lol. Last edited by JonahUK; 10-08-2012 at 12:35 PM. |

Can a 3k, that has a min praxis of lets say 3.60, be updated to 4.25, then downgraded back to 3.60? Obviously it wont go down to 3.55, but if it can return to 3.60 that would be pointlessly interesting.... ![]() Also welcome to PS3Hax @ginnz

Cool,
so i assume then, if i can find a model that fits in the criteria listed, even if it's at the most current firmware, I should be able to downgrade it? now i have a little research to do... Thanks for the info guys, I have something to work with now. ginnz.

@ginnz
, keep in mind that once you are on 3.55 firmware you may not get access to PSN/SEN since you need to be on latest firmware which is 4.25 to access, also some of the newer games may not be able to be playable due to firmware issues. Also keep an E3 flasher handy so if your son mistakenly updates the firmware to lets 4.21 which is unhackable then you can downgrade it.
Also if you are getting a used one be sure it hasn't had the YLOD the Yellow light of death otherwise it will be useless if you get this issue you will have a nice show piece, also the PS3 file formate system for the external HDD is FAT32 just so you know that. I think that would be all for now, ill add more if you need anything else. Do not get scammed on YouTube because most of the videos claiming to have firmware 4.25 jailbreaks and CFW are lies, if your son happens to come across these ask him to double check with you before upgrading firmware, otherwise you may end up hurting your future system. And eventually losing out on a lot of money.
