No, as you are changing firmware so you will overwite any AACS keys present.
It has nothing to do with the BD drive itself per se.

The FW (PS3 not BD Drive) contains the whole AACS functions/procedure etc so when you put a disc in, the drive will check those two self file I mentioned earlier (maybe more?) to see if the keys are valid for the MKB etc. on the disc (this is assumption btw) and if so, update the driver DRL/HRL etc. as well as the Data Revoke folder in devflash3.

Once everything matches and is up to date, the disc will play and be decrypted

If not, you are prompted to update and/or get playback prohibited etc.

oh!
so if i put a drive from a 3.55fw into a 4.25fw ps3 (and if remarry wasnt an issue) then the system would still play recent bdvd's as its all controlled by the system not the drive?

or am i way off ?

As far as I understand it, yes.

It seems to be FW dependent rather than drive dependent. I suppose the best people to ask would be glevland or euss as they would know a lot more on exactly how it works.

I could be totally wrong

An ideal test would be someone who has a flasher to test a new movie on 3.55, update to 4.25, play it (it will update the HRL/DRL on the BD drive etc), then downgrade to 3.55 and see if it plays again (as you previously stated).

You will probably get the prohibited playback message first, so that would need to be fixed.

As you can't access the filesystem on 4.25, you would have use a BR drive in a PC to look at the MKB_RO.inf file to get the DRL

The DRL in the Data Revoke folder HAS to match the DRL on the drive to stop the prohibited playback message. Once that has been sorted, if the AACS keys are stored on the drive, the film should play.

If not, it means they are stored in the PS3 FW.

i think i have a flasher or 2 somewhere

and i have just "won" prometheus bdvd (today is the release date for the uk) so its an up to date film

i think it should be ideal to test.

i dont have a bdvd for my laptop though (i do have one from an acer 6920 i use as external but the blueray is software dependant so it wont work )

so back to e-bay
is the MKB_RO.inf file easy to find?
this will be the first blu ray i would have looked at like this so i have no idea lol

MKB_RO.inf is on the root of the disc and is visible in Windows (may have to show hidden files) and is not encrypted so you can open with a hex editor.

If you look at your current 3.55 DRL files (2 of them located in dev_flash3\Data Revoke\DRL) in a hex editor, you should be able to copy and paste from the disc to create a matching DRL (check the wiki for more info)

If not, you can use DRLTools that was released some time ago (after the first downgrade broke bluray) which will create a valid DRL file from the MKB_RO.inf file for you automatically (Windows based tool) whcih you can just copy over.

ok
the film is due next week (tue / wed)
so i will search around and find the correct wiki pages and the DRLTools you mention and post links here so the progress can be seen (and so i dont loose the pages lol)

i hope no one minds this thread being "slightly" de-railed from a help thread to a technical thread now.

thanks for your guidance @JonahUK
i will reply again here when i have everything together

now to the wiki .....
