Ps3: no HDMI and no PS2 games?

Hi! I'm new here, as I thought there would be no better place to look for help after scouring google for God knows how long :D

Basically I bought a 60gb ps3 (PAL) for dirt cheap as it wont display through hdmi, I've tried resetting the display settings etc, but I play retro games on my CRT tv anyway so I really don't mind no hdmi when I only really want to play ps2 games and the occasional ps3 game!

To sum up / tl;dr

My ps3 has no hdmi output, av works fine, but when I try to play ps2 games (Compatible ones) The screen just turns a dark red hue and the controller disconnects, I can eject the disc but apart from that the console is frozen.

Thanks for ANY help in advance, Thanks you

Thanks for input! It was more than worth it for the box and controller if that tells you anything Do you reckon a reflow/reball would do it?, it's still got the warranty sticker in-tact.

Highly doubt it. If it's only the HDMI that doesn't work then it's not GPU related. As for PS2, I've never heard of anyone needing a reball on the EE/GS, so the problem is most likely also somewhere else.

That makes sense.... I'll crack it open and check it out I suppose, but seeing as its still sealed I doubt there's much internal damage :/

Bit of an update... the Safe mode menu works, but isn't viewable, I've tried all the options with no change, also it seems the controller won't connect wirelessly to start with, I'll have to plug it in via USB for it to be recognised, but it will stay connected after unplugging the usb.

Once again, any help is really appreciated

edit: holding down the eject button then turning it on by the back switch doesn't turn the fans on full speed like it should (I think?) it just beeps 3 times and doesn't turn on... it will repeat this if I keep holding the eject button
