Well, I've disassembled the drive and found that all mechanisms are where they should be. Just to be safe, I moved them out of place by hand and then back into place. I also decided to see what the drive would do when eject was pressed to see where the sounds were coming from. The only thing that moves when eject is pressed is the lens stylus on the track. It's normal for that to move, so that's not suspicious. I ordered a ribbon cable last night and that's what I'll try next. If it's still no go, then I might just replace the drive. Hopefully it's not the logic board that's shot, or I'm screwed.

Yeah, I live in Plymouth. But my drive is the kind that doesn't have the logic board on the outside (it's under the bottom cover). If the one you have is that kind, I'd be interested. Any asking price on it?

it can sometimes be the mech under this try putting it back on connect up and with the lid to the drive off try and put a disc in like you normally would it might not be triggering the switches. or the cogs might have displaced themselves. like i said earlier you have to be quite forceful sometimes and it can take a bit of fiddling around. the first time i did it it took about 30 min to get it right.
