Sony is removing another feature, "Life with Playstation"

What Life with playstation was...
Introducing “Life with PlayStation”

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai announced "Life with PlayStation" for the PS3. During the presentation, the "Life" was demoed for the audience for the first time — the service shows the Earth, and users can access current news and weather for locations around the world. It's possible to even pull up the full article from the headline. Users can also set background music while looking at the Earth, checking the weather and the world news. Click through pics below to see it in action.

And what they said...
By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding @hom e, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding @hom e project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding @hom e research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding @hom e, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding @hom e simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

I liked this program, But again Sony is removing something.

It is basically google news on a 3D modeled earth, With world webcams. I used it once in a while. But I don't see why they would remove something so simple that can not be using more then 100mb. But again this is Sony.

I agree there, But why Can't you remove folding at home. But keep the news and webcams. You couldn't ever run both at the same time.

maybe they simply compared units sold vs units running life

or if it was indeed a google app running on ps3, maybe their license to use it expired and they didnt want to renew it. im pretty sure i saw google icons in the filesystem somewhere

By the way this is worded...
"and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University's Alzheimer's Disease research. Considering the contributtion the PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University"

And...

"how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimers disease. The next steps, now underway at Stamford, are to take this lead compound and help push it torwards a viable drug"

Sounds to me sony wanted some sort of royalties for research, got denied so they pulled the plug. As he states they got the program working on other cpu/gpu's, so basically I hear FU we don't need you.
