The reason it is different with the PS3 is because. 1. The skilled hackers aren't releasing their findings publicly 2. They are sharing their findings in a closed circle. 3. The findings are being sold to companies for a profit by the hackers themselves or their associates who they shared their findings with. You can make of that what you will, but that is undeniably the real situation. Who are the bad guys? I say the hackers, and I would challenge anyone to give a good reason why it is not the hackers. That is assuming you wish the likes of profiteering to be removed from this. Purely from an analytical point of view, if you or anyone else wishes there to be no profiteering then you should be directing your anger to the poisonous root of the problem. Humans by nature will seek to profit if they can with minimal work, it's natural behaviour. The reason hackers in the past have been placed on a pedestal is because they are seen as "champions" of freedom and have unfaltering values on freedom of speech and they hold the idea of freedom of information as one of their core values. The majority of the PS3 hackers do not deserve to be called hackers and do not share these moral attributes that the classic hacker has. They are childish silly little brats (To put it simply). I'm forever reading the same old repeated "the hackers don't owe you anything" for not releasing their findings. This is not my point, my point is that they are not hackers. By definition, a hacker releases their findings publicly, in return they receive respect, and an elevated place in technically minded people's hearts and minds. That is the payment. That is how it always worked. Until the PS3 scene started. You see, you can't blame business for the failings in these "hacker's" personalities and questionable motivations. They are a disgrace to the term "hacker" and have forever damaged the reputation of hackers as a collective. My point of view might be outdated now, who knows and maybe the term "hacker" needs to be evaluated as a result of scourge of the PS3 hacking scene. Bare in mind here that I'm talking within the context of a closed hardware or software system. At the end of the day the hackers at the root of this can do what they like who am I to question them? They owe me nothing. But if that is to be a genuine question, it should be reworded. "At the end of the day the people at the root of this can do what they like, who am I to question them?". I am nobody to question, them, because they aren't hackers and therefore aren't pulling down the tradition and good will of people's perceptions of hackers. If they are "hackers". Then I am within my rights to pass comment on the disgrace that they are. Sounds cheesy but Spiderman's old man had it right "With great power comes great responsibility". These aren't "good hackers". They're "spiteful people". /Just a rant and my point of view of course, but it's not some silly knee-jerk response, it's basically how I've felt from the beginning of this who sorry shameful scene as a lay person who has read plenty of points from all sides and has no vested interest in any of it.
