Street retail game stores are ultimately going to bankrupt
So, today I entered a CeX game store (in UK) and to my surprise (not really), the games were all bloody overprices and the consoles were the same thing.
Plus, the employee I asked about PS3's firmware didn't know what the FIRMWARE was, I had to repeat myself several times and also use "system software". Honestly, why do they hire numbskulls that hardly know anything about what they're selling. This got me annoyed because he should know what a FIRMWARE is. They should hire people that know what they're dealing with. Anyway, for example Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi costed there £25 USED and on Zavvi it's £14.95 with FREE SHIPPING. Sorry, South Park was indeed right, it's time to close the blockbuster and alikes for good. Amazon, eBay, Zavvi, TheHut, are going to takeover the market. Bye bye, overpriced street game stores.

The only time I heard and read "Redbox" was on South Park's 'Blockbuster is Dead' episode.
With retail game stores closing people will lose their jobs, but selling online has its advantages too. Lower prices, more sales, etc. |

Your title is misleading. Retail game stores are not going bankrupt. What I see is a small rant about the way certain retailers do business. There is nothing wrong with that because I have raged about GameStop before.
Say on Tuesday I go buy Assassin's Creed 3. I decide the game is terrible and want to sell it on Wednesday. Gamestop will give me $30, but they turn around and sell it for $55. They are worse than pirates. The devs profit off of that one copy only once, while they profit from it multiple times all while screwing over the end user. For whatever reason people keep going back. I haven't done business with Gamestop in over a year. Sadly I go to Walmart and buy my games now They talk about next gen might be strictly digital and while I hate that idea, at least it would put ****ty companies like lamestop underground. I agree about the people these companies hire. I remember an employee back in 2006 telling me his friend had a hacked ps3. He then proceeded to argue with me when I told him he was full of ****. Also the thing about these game stores that is probably the most annoying to me is the damn fanboyism you will see. I can go into my local gamestop and if I buy a PS3 game I have to hear "you should get that on 360. 360 is better and will treat ps3 customers like ****." I go to the next gamestop over and they are all ps3 fanboys that argue how the ps3 is better and look down on people making 360 purchases. I have all 3 consoles and I have a preference of consoles based on the game I am buying. I don't believe in the fanboy crap and I am just there to buy a game and to go home and play it. I dont need these d0uche canoe fanboys telling me what I need to spending my money on. If I wanted to go in and buy Dance Central for the wii that is nobodies business but my own and they do not need to be telling me what console I should be worshipping like they do. I have got to the point anytime I go in there I am rude. We do have a much smaller local game shop now called G2K Games, and they are amazing. Talking to one of those employess is like talking to some of the people here, you never get put down for your choice of purchase, they sell everything from Sega Master system to current gen as well as Magic cards, comics, and hardback Manga. That store is awesome and they give much better trade in/sell value than LameFlop.

Thing is OP, retailers of this nature generally give minimum wage. People who have good communication skills and know about "PS3 firmware" AND who are happy to work for minimum wage...aren't so common. Very few places that sell specific goods employ people who know anything about the product they are selling except the basics. You just don't notice, because you don't know anything about that other stuff either. One example is hiking shops, I went to one about a year ago to get kitted out for 6 weeks of hiking in Spain, bare in mind before this I hadn't walked more than a mile or two for years. The woman there who helped me chose a load of stuff, she seemed to know what she was on about. I went to that same shop a few months ago, (I am now an experienced hiker, or at least I know a lot about various products, terms, etc). She still works there and I didn't think she had a clue. The point here is that her communication skills were very good, she was calm, friendly and have a sociable aura. That is much more important than in-depth product knowledge when it comes to selling stuff and overall it's what the majority of customers want. You can frown all you like, but you, me, and so on aren't everyone. I used to think like you when I was a teenager...no offense, I remember getting really angry at a person who miss-sold a customer a Dreamcast when production had already stopped and the console was finished...It made me sieve with rage...I think it was partly some kind of jealousy thing, I knew something that this person didn't and HE has a job!? "I could do this job". I was only about 13-14 at the time. I think you're partly experiencing that feeling, but that's not where the skill in sales comes, the skill is talking to people and selling them something the customer doesn't want or need. In that department, and it took me a good few years to realize, this guy did an admirable job. Don't mean to patronize but maybe you hadn't thought of it in that way.... Mind you we are talking about Cex, things don't get much worse than that

CEX are reasonably priced for a lot of used goods, yeah some are overpriced but generally they are better than Game/Gamestation. They also offer you a lot more in trade-in/cash value for goods you take in.
Did you find out if they updated the fw on their consoles btw? |
