Think it's cos of the size of PS3 Blu-ray and all it's data that it's not installed. Uncompressed 5.1/7.1 sound takes up alot of space. Not everybody has terabyte drives. 360 barely uses 5.1 sound cos of space restrictions of DVD. So hard drives can be small.

Afaik xb0x360 never had a blur-ray drive, yeah they can store the games on their OWN hdd's even external..but they are still with DVD's drives. (I own one and is a good feature).

I read somewhere that microsoft wanted blu-ray tech for the next console or they will try to buy some licenses.

Im not a sony lover but i have to give them the upper hand on that. They pushed their luck attaching a new tech like blu-ray back on 2006 on their console.
But Microsoft 7 years later they still stuck with the same DVD drives.

While we can purchase a game with ONE Blu-ray disc, well microsoft with Final fantasy XIII if i recall well they have 3 dvds to swap while playing.
We don't need to swap unless we want to eject and play another game or movie .

So sony forced in some way the competence to make some *heavy* move on the next gen. If xbox720 comes with another DVD's drive plus some cloud system = ****ed.
So Nintendo and many other corporations will have to think a better way to make less painless to the end user to store his/her games and movies.

@hellsing9 , I currently don't have a single game that has multiple discs and even if I did, I couldn't care less because the more discs the better, I love having a tonload of discs.

Blu-ray for console games is good because of the 50 GB but the slow speed doesn't really help it at all. Hopefully $ony will be wise this time.

The “ultimate goal” for the hardware, we were told, is for it to be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D with “no problem,” to create a machine that’s powerful enough for “today and tomorrow’s market”.
A lot of people have been enjoying their "ultimate goal" on the PC for many years already. Is that meant to impress anyone? Tomorrow's market will be all about 4k.

Why are they still focusing on 3D? I thought it had been forgotten some time ago.

As mentioned before, it will be 4k. Sony said their next console will support it a while ago.

I was saying that the PS4/Orbis (whatever it will be called) will not natively support PS3 titles...and it will not have the horsepower to "emulate" it as the PS3 does with PSX/PS1 and PS2 titles. The PS4 will most likely "emulate" PSX and PS2 titles....via their PSN/SEN....I don't know if slapping an original PSX/PS2 disc will work.....we'll have to wait and see.

PSX, to me, refers to the Playstation 1....thus PSX games/titles.

Why does anyone even care about 4k resolution anyways. I bet you will see maybe 2-3 games be running those resolutions and those game will obviously look like ass and lack detail. I'm already doubting they will have games running at 1080p for next gen for very long. As soon as the game engines get more complex developers will opt for lower resolutions.

Though, I doubt it will be called "PlayStation 4".

Four in Japanese has demeaning definitions so a name instead of a number might be what's gonna be used.
The PS3 might have support until 2015, and the PS4 might be called another name, but that doesn't change my prediction, which is a commonly accepted one by industry people. Wii U will have a year ahead and that matters (I know, it may be a different target, but Sony won't risk loosing market)

The 360 can't have a 512 fully dedicated to the video, that impossible. that would leave nothing for other things, Common sense should have told you that.
