RedTree, I have the similar problem(s), also being in the UK. I am assuming that the 30AWG wire you found is the ebay stuff which I too have been perusing.

Was unsure too, but I believe the solution (for me anyway) was in your original question. An ebay search for 26AWG we only gets us CAT5e network cables. But what the heck is wrong with them? They're single-core, the right spec diameter etc right? Honestly, there's no harm ordering the 30AWG too since its so cheap. I'm just going by what other people have written on PS3DevWiki that 26AWG is the best. To whit the quote:

"1x 30AWG Kynar Wire or 26 AWG Kynar Wire. (Few have reported 30AWG may be too small and has interference but does work if done well.)"

So they are basically officially recommending you to stick with those Cat5e cables, presuming that they are indeed 26AWG single-core in there.

Its also very important to explain:

Be sure you have all the right *other* support materials and prep work for these finer kinds of solder jobs with. Many people don't initially follow such guidance with all the associated hassles and extra time. But you definately need to prep the area with some flux first. Either the low-viscousity liquid vial or the thicker (traditional) grease/wax type of flux. Doesnt matter which, but the simple grease type isnt wasted so much by running off the PCB. Spread that on liberally first you cannot skip this step. Then prepare the contact pads on the mobo by beading solder onto them. There is a great youtube video by MrEnergyBreeze called "Progskeet & Teensy++ PS3 motherboard wiring tips and preparation" that shows how to do this all perfectly.

6.not checking clip connection, before closing console
7.no repasting of RSX and CellBE
8.not using torc moment screwdriver, but electric drill
9.uneven pressure when mounting frontboard
10.greasy fingerprints all over the motherboard (bonus fingerprint: under cellophane tape)
11.dual sata adaptor is used (not recommended, as ps3 host does not support SATA Port Multiplier)
12.E3 is ´wobbly´ because no cardboard filler was used to prevent movement (bracket design error)
13.not using the 'Samsung' multiconsole update for E3 and no proper SHA1 identification of the correctness of file
14.using 001000 for dumping, not using flashfun, thus risking busy flashbus on a multithreaded system
15.not validate content of dumps, only size
16.doing a restore (will permabrick console if clipped bad)
17.when unpluging the power cord at 19:09, insuficient time to dischargue capacitors of power supply (a real reset needs more time)

19.misnaming ¨2nd usb port¨ -> it's usb00000 because we count from right to left in ps3 (rightmost, closest to BD)
20.no proper identification of lv2diag.self (there exist many!) and PS3UPDAT.PUP to be used (SHA1)
21.after FSM reinstall, no boot to XMB to check it booting proper with FSM active
22.not setting proper time, corrupting node database unneeded
23.fix permission errors (archaic, not needed)
biggest error : not reading the (E3) downgrade guide on wiki

really nice that they list the faults with the above but NOT with mine
faults with mine are :-
i kept getting booted out of the irc after important info was given to me so i was unable to cut and paste the chat log. i also will miss stuff that was said by pure bad memory (i do admit that)
1. my guide is a copy of various wiki pages (yes i really was told this. you decide what that meens)
2. the wiki is updated more often
3. only read partialy into the guide and found the above errors. (not sure which guide was partialy read or which step? i only assume its the verify step)
4. was told to link to the wiki pages....... you cannot link the wiki. if you check the wiki's banner it states this?? also this guide is to simplify the wiki. its not easy saying the bootloader is such a size so check it. how do you check it? the wiki doesnt say in any detail. so a noob will just skip this.
5. with out a cut and paste of the irc the general talk was that it needs more detail and more info in the correct areas
was told to miss the hdd area ?? bit strange as i dont cover that anyway.

i was told at the start of the convo that the bricks happened as the guide says to erase then flash back THEN check the dump??

IF you had read the guide it doesnt say to erase ANYTHING and it doesnt say to flash back before you check the dump.

there is even a problem with telling ppl to go get there dump checked on the irc #downgrading
channel.
this is where I was told I should go to get my dump double checked but no i shouldnt do that.
so i will remove that part and open a thread here just for dumps to get checked

now with all the guides out there done by various ppl / devs / admin etc that are both incompleate and full of errors that even i can see why are these not mentioned in the wiki

sorry for the rant but i have worked hard on this to find out that behind my back this has been posted on the wiki with NO messages to myself about the brick's. i even have it in red to tell me if something is found but no just post what you will in the wiki and hide what you dont want ppl to see (and on some subjects give miss information. DEX anybody?)

i know it says not to follow this gide any more is this because some people who have tryed it have bricked there ps3 most likly to folt of there own or is this a bad gide to follow iam a little confused was gona get my progskreet thingy this week and follow this gide at my own risk with no blame liying on any one but me if i bricked it
what iam asking is is this still the best gide for someone who is willing to try?

bricks are blamed on my guide apparently saying to erase then flash the patched dump back BEFORE having it checked.
my guide DOES NOT & HAS NOT said this.

so each file is 1 person downgrading atleast 1 console so all the above added up is 1571 downgrades (minimum some ppl downgrade 50+ consoles)

i cannot tell you to follow this as i need to do some changes.
so i have re-posted the guide so i can access it better for my own personal use.

i posted my guide in the first place as there was no 1 good guide with all the info and all the correct files in 1 place that was easy and simple to follow.

the wiki has all the info but not in 1 place and not in a user friendly manner.
ie it expects you to know how to use these programs (i show you)
it expects you to understand what and where to search by telling you in a technical manner (i show you what you should have on screen and how to get it on screen all you have to do is compair your screen to my screen shots)

but even though euss looked at my guide 2 months ago and said nothing about it being a bad guide (yes after you messaged me i saw in your history that you had been in the guide)

but instead 3 days ago it became a brick guide (right after the wiki was updated? hmmm) i just spotted the date it was added by looking at the page history

as i said in my post a good few pages ago there is nothing wrong with the guide as i said noobs trying to downgrade ps3s and there not reading the instructions right and getting their ps3s bricked i have done a good few with the guide and no bricks so the problem lies with the user not the guide and theres a few guys on this forum will say im right and those who disagree its like new firmware cfw 4.30 they all jumped on the bandwagon and started get bricks with it well you have options do or dont do it thats all i can say about it so i say the guide should go back up and if you want to use it or dont use it nobodys got your arms tied
