It's no surprise that this would at some point happen, but now's official.

The list of gaming publications to cease production is growing. Publisher Future US confirmed to Game Informer that PlayStation: The Official Magazine's Holiday 2012 issue will be its last. No further information regarding why the magazine is coming to an end is available. PlayStation: The Official Magazine editor-in-chief Roger Burchill remarked on Twitter, "And…I think it's time I say 'So long and thanks for all the fish,' and take a little break from Twitter. Check you on the flip side." According to marketing material documents, the magazine boasted a circulation of approximately 139,000 and an audience of 956,320. PlayStation: The Official Magazine is the second gaming-focused publication that Future US has canceled recently, following the closure of Nintendo Power in August. Additionally, the cancellation of PlayStation: The Official Magazine comes one year after GamePro shut down after 23 years of continual publication.

It sucks that people are going to lose their jobs but with the internet now it really makes magazines useless.

The contents of a magazine -- especially one such as the "PlayStation: The Official Magazine" -- consisted of nothing more than PlayStation advertisements mixed in with a little news and maybe Sony threw in a demo disc. There are no uses for magazines anymore. Period. The whole purpose of a magazine is to sell the reader to advertisers. Why on Earth would Sony continue to publish something they can do for free on their blog? The majority of the world is online and you don't need a uber-1337 Internet connection to view Sony's blog and keep yourself updated. There, that's your magazine.

Now, look at a book. Go to your nearest Barnes & Nobles book store and look around - chances are every book written was by a passionate author who would rather not advertise the next Chevrolet in a magazine but instead share a vision with faithful listeners. Not only that, but the length of a book far exceeds the laughable 30 pages in a magazine. Because books are so much longer, readers choose to read them in comfort. Try reading an entire book comfortably on your computer monitor hunched over for hours on end. People read books to be enlightened, something a magazine 99% of the time DOES NOT DO. Good God, @itskamel . I don't know where this one came from. The basic idea of a book will never die where as magazines will continue to change and change and change because magazines are nothing more than advertisements.
