Hello folks, I'm planning on buying a PS3 within this year. I've read from many sources, namely ones that talk about downgrading, upgrading, and more. I've read Rogero's and Greg Rasputin's posts, but nothing has prepared me to decide which PS3 I should buy to star my journey of Jailbreaking one.

I am reluctant to ordering online; I'd rather do it on Craig's List. I don't want to use my credit card, just cash or debit.

I know the worst place to get a PS3 to hack is a local Walmart, as it is guaranteed to have irreversible official firmware. How about second-hand shops?

I would do fine with 3.55 KMEAW, but when I contacted some sellers on Craig's List, they report back to me that they have 4.21. Don't know if it's custom or official.

So I'm stuck. Where should I buy a PS3 from? How can I make sure it's the right one to mod? Or should I wait until Sony abandons PS3s for PS4?

Any help would be appreciated.

i'm looking to purchase a ps3 also, how do you determine what firmware version your system has? this was something the people already knew who you were purchasing from or you had to tell them where to look? i am thinking of going the craigslist route myself.

You could ask the seller(s) what the PS3 Slim model is (2000, 3000, 4000) and the Firmware it has.

Since you're aiming to buy a PS3 with a CFW, you should be sincere with them about it as no confusion is made up this way.

My PS3 Slim 2003B with 4.20 OFW is packed up in its box, but because I don't really use it right now.

I've been playing Dragon Ball Z For Kinect on Xbox 360 and been enjoying it a lot regardless of the negative reviews.

Ask the employee/seller to check the 'Software Version' or 'Firmware' that it has.

If you get a fat, you WILL be able to back it, if its higher than 3.55 you WILL need a flasher. Less than 3.55 you are good to go.

Slim you have a chance but only on the early models.

Super slim forget about it.

Check the wiki to see about the min firmware with the model number, and if you get one that can be hacked there are people on this site who can flash it for you if needed.

Since chances are higher you're going to have to downgrade it and you're going the Craigslist route....

- if its a PHAT PS3 eg. (CECHA through CECHQ) these can be downgraded.

- if its a SLIM PS3 with model (CECH-20xxA through CECH-25xxB) you'll have to ask the seller to give you more info from the back of the PS3 namely, the DATE CODE.

They should be able to reply back with this info and you'll know for sure to purchase it or not. Don't even bother with PS3 SLIMs with model numbers CECH-3xxx or the newer CECH-4xxx.

Hello I am new to the forum.

Recently I saw really cheap superslim ps3 for about $200. I was about to get it but good thing I read in this forum that superslim cannot play backup games.

I would also like to buy a new ps3. Any good place to buy? I don't care if it is a slim fat. I just want a ps3 that can play backed up game that is under $200. I dont mind doing firmware things myself. I would like have a brand new ps3 though... Any good place to buy? Or any website sell ps3 with cfw already installed?

Brand new, good luck with that.

There are a few posts on here that certain bundles I.e black ops 1 came with firmware that is hackable, other than that I suggest you read the forums/Google the older bundle packs

Nope.. Only ones are the CECHA to CECHQ for the Phat ones and from CECH-2000 to SOME CECH-2500 Slims... But if you got a CECH-2500 that is below 3.55 then you're lucky

You should care whether it's FAT or Slim because the fatty might get YLOD'ded and then you're screwed.

I've considered buying a PS3 FAT but I'm worried it'll get YLOD'ded. :-|
