First of all, forgive my n00bness in XBox.
Halo 4 seems to require a compulsory update do my system. It reminds me of when I bought a Kinect.
My question is, will this reflash my drive or is like the Kinect Update where it only adds a few stuff?

I don't know from a friend experience the update for some reason ****ed up his flash.

What dash are you on? As long as it is passed the Spring 2011 dashboard update then your drive will not be reflashed.

I think I updated in the beggining of this summer, but I can't remember for sure.
My current dash is 2.0.14719.0, is it safe then to update for me? Btw, is it ok to update from the game disk or should I get it from elsewhere?
(If it is of any relevance, my XBox is one of the first 20 GB model and the drive is one of the original Hitachi ones.)

DO NOT GO PASSED 14719!!!!!!!! You still have an RGH/RGH2 capable box if that is the path you wish to take. If you do decide to update, MS will not change your drive firmware. On your drive LT 2.0 will be sufficient if it is a non ap 2.5 capable drive. If it is capable of AP 2.5 then you should wait until LT 3.0 for that specific hitachi. I am not sure which hitachi you have.

After some browsing on the subject, I don't think I have the skills do preform such hack. I have none experience in hardmodding. I'd have to get someone to do it for me.
I understand it'd allow me to run unsigned code. Aside from homebrew, what are the major pros? What would it enable me to?
I believe it's 2.5 non-capable.
Btw, is there a way to play the game without updating?
