If you're willing to tear apart the ps3. You should be able to use a swap disc with swap magic embedded into the second disc.

Swap disc as in any ol' original PS2 disc for the start up and then a second disc with the SM code burned onto it? Damn, now I wish I had a test BC PS3. Thanks for the interesting thought.

Yea, swap discs were always a fave method of mine. Free, yet somewhat challenging, and always interesting. I used to save hotel room keys just in case i ended up needing one for the pull.
edit: this post is number 1234 in this thread, just saying.

I'm confused after reading the OP - post...
Ok this is confusing, it says I need this:
"...Launch PS3 (20/60gb)..." But down in the FAQ it says that this will work on a PS3 that doesn't have the Emotion Engine (aka, non launch PS3s)... So my question is this: Will my (USA) JB PS3 (cfw - 3.55) [Model: CECHK01] {80GB} work with this 'Swapmagic3' so I can play my PS2 game backups on my PS3? I just need to get these for my PS3, right?: - Swap Magic 3.6 plus - Only one of either: 'Slide Tool' or 'Flip Top Cover' or 'Magic Switch Pro' Then I can play my backups of my PS2 games on my PS3, right? BTW: What size of USB flash drive is recommended, or can it see almost any size/brand? |

you need SM 3.6+ or SM 3.8 coder. usb device compatibilty is kind of low. I have loads of usb pens that don´t work. all Sandisk usb pens seem to work, the psp too. If your using usbloader, your loading off usb. if you want to do a disc swap then you have to open up the ps3 or install a switch. there´s no flip top or slide tool for the ps3. if you do a disc swap then you don´t need SM, just a ps2 game. Be warned that I heard this could damage your laser. Keep in mind that through usb loading the ps3 is in ps2 mode and usb speed is 1.1. video playback in games is unbearably slow which will make most games almost unplayable. just google usb advance for the ps2 for more info. as much as I hate to promote a dongle, if you really want to play ps2 backups on your ps3 then the best solution would be a cobra dongle. you could also spend just a little more and get a second hand ps2 and you´ll have full compatability. if your ps3 is the one without the emotion engine chip then compatibilty is maybe 85%.

WTF?
are you saying, that even now - that is having CFW and all that - for playing PS2 backups, one still needs "external tricks" like SM 3.6 ??
multiM does support copying of PS2 discs, but those copies won't work - just black screen; original does work, though (GoW II) p.s. I do have SM and played around with it long before going on CFW, but the compatibility really sucks (not that of USB, I got a drive that works; the game-compatibility is really bad) p.p.s. not that it matters, only have two PS2 games (GoW I & GoW II) - just curious ;-) |

There´s also Cobra for those on CFW but the Swap Magic "Tricks" works on OFW. So at least you can have some ps2 homebrew and still be official and not worry about a ban.

interesting...
what actually is Cobra? - another CFW? or some homebrew running on Rogero? is this a pure software emulator? don't want that, my PS3 plays PS2 games in hardware, so no chance for a lame s/w emu... anyway: the forum search didn't reveal any useful results, where can I get more info about Cobra? |
