anyway there are schematics for the 60, 80 GB fat ps3 version, i know it's not the slim, but the majority of the ic's are hopefully the same.

for the fat ps3 ic 4002 (CXR713120-202GB-TL) , controls the standby to on part, if the standby led is going off that ic must have lost power.

in all other cases like the 12v won't come on the standby led would not go off, but probably blink.

the power supply delivers +5V and on the mainboard there's a regulator that creates 3,3V out of the +5V for ic 4002 to work.

for the fat the regulator type is NCP511SN33T1G (ic 6005)

again all this info is for the fat ps3 so it might be useless.
Hey Mr D I'm having this problem on my 80gb fat right now, could use a lil nudge in right direction.

Here is what it does :

your problem looks a bit like the ylod thing.

do you hear the fan turn on?, if not then check if the 12v from the power supply comes alive.

the easiest way to check this is from the bluray 4 pins power connector.

i think you have the classic ylod, before you are thinking about heatgun/oventrick or reballing you could try this alternative method (using washers) , havent tested it myself but hey you never know.

Thanx bud I will look into that. I took ps3 apart and pulled the MB and looks like paste is almost gone and dried up. Some of the solder points are cracked. So if this trick wont work looks like its guna be a 80-100$ bill fix for my launch ps3 :-(

Yeah washers didn't work :-/ for me

@Mr.Dutch

Nvm on price, pays to do local research on computer repair stores :-)

Found one 20min from home that will reball same day for 35$ and uses lead based solder and Arctic silver paste ^_^

The launch ps3 lives again :-D
