In an exclusive interview with PSU.com, U.K. developer Clever Beans has suggested that the likelihood of the PlayStation 4 being backwards-compatible with PS3 games is slim.

When questioned on the subject of backwards-compatibility on Sony’s next-generation console, Clever Bean’s directors Martin Turton and Andrew Newton said that they think “it is something that would be very difficult to achieve”, though they do go on to say that it could potentially be “handled using cloud-based streaming.”

With Sony acquiring the cloud-based streaming service Gaikai earlier this year, it’s extremely likely that it has plans to make use of the technology with the PlayStation 4, and though we still don’t know for sure exactly how it intends to implement streaming, it does look likely to be a viable solution to solve the backwards-compatibility dilemma.

With such a great range of titles available on PS3, users will certainly want to be able to play PS3 games on the next PlayStation console - and Sony will surely want to keep selling some of its triple-A titles to PS4 adopters. However, because of the radically different architecture of the new console, which is said to include the AMD x64 CPU and AMD Southern Islands GPU, a PS3 Blu-ray disc is rumoured to be unlikely to work and the option of making PS3 games available via PSN to download too expensive to emulate.

cloud gaming is a sure reason for me to not buy into the next gen playstation, even if it is allegedly for BC because if they implement it then you can bet that they will make the most of it with modern games too, using a bait and switch tactic most likely in order to first sell consoles then f*ck the customers

connections here are at best 500kb/s download rate in summer and approx 300kb/s in winter with no fiber planned whatsoever
after taking into account other family members using the internet to stream/play etc, the quality of streaming is SD only and patchy at best.
input lag is another issue that will not be getting a resolve anytime soon.
ive been using gakai since the first beta and although it improved slightly, it still wasnt good enough to be used as a daily service.

lol @ all the power in ps4 and they rely on cloud service that can be utilised on a mobile phone so no need for the new console at all.

i think this time around, ill leave the sony product until i have had my fun with nintendo and microsoft first

PS3 games via PSN....I'm gonna have so much fun downloading 30GB games such as God of War 3, Uncharted 3, etc...f*** that.

if thats the case then i probley wont buy a ps4 . as is only 1 game i play online and that socom confrontation . untill a new socom comes out then i might think diffent . i just use the money i would of and spend it upgrading my pc more

you dont download. thats the point. you never have the game at all. not on your console/not on disc.

Cloud gaming only works in Japan and Hollywood with there NICE connection. What about the rest of the world? And at the end of the day "with cloud gaming" you dont own the game. Deal breaker for me. I love God of War series and why should I have to pay the same game over and over and over again? Do I look like the money tree?

Unfortunately, people will support and next generation console and pay for. Unknowingly, Sony will rip them off the cloud streaming games, but they don't care. I on the other hand, will not buy the ps4 unless I physically own my games.
