Thanks for your informative help!

Ahh ok. I'm on the official website, but they don't have a link for firmware 3.55.
So i'll put the firmware on a separate USB?

Yes,
after you format the HD and put it inside the ps3 it will ask you to format it again, do so, then it will ask you to insert the OFW.
do not use any one more than 3.55

1. The HDD does not need to be formatted. The PS3 will prompt you to format as soon as it starts. It uses a proprietary file system. The HDD will be only readable by the PS3 that formatted it (encrypted).

2. It will ask you for a firmware update if it is a NOR flash console. If the firmware it asks fore is 3.55 or lower, install 3.55! Anything higher and you will need to buy an install a hardware flasher.

Ok guys, I've come across another problem . The PS3 won't start. This initially happened when I got it but I thought it was like that and I thought it would work with a hard drive on. So when I turn it on, the light is green for like 3 seconds, then there's a slight yellow light, 3 beeps, and then red flashing light. How can I fix this? Should I create a new thread.

Solder a wire from the nor tristate to VSS (ground) on motherboard.

If it stays on with black screen, no hdd activity, and solid green light, that means it is from a bad flash. And may be fixable with a hardware flasher.

If it doesn't stay on and does the same YLOD, it means there is a hardware failure somewhere. May be fixable with a reflow/reball.

Oh wait, you have a nand model. I don't know which points to do it on nands, but I think there still is a way.
