Job Interview Next Week
To my surprise, I actually got a job interview at Macy's next week... I don't have any work experience and have never been interviewed in my life. I don't really know what to say, too... But I'll try hard to sound professional and stuff because I really want the job. I said on my online application that I'd be willing to work at any time, weekends and holidays, etc...
Any tips for the interview? |

Be as calm as you can. Don't hold your own hands. You want to be firm and confident, but not coming across as an ******* or the "holier than thou" person.
It's been about 10-15 years since I've had an interview myself. Never liked them. Also, look respectable and don't dress like a slob. Shave

be relaxed but please leave your superior attitude at the door when you go in. no offence intended.
tell them what they want to hear but in a relaxed way. dont make yourself out to be too good for the job and for the love of god, if he hands you anything in writing, DONT SPELLCHECK IT!

Assuming you're going out for a sales/customer service position, sell yourself to the interviewer that you're a people person (not saying you're not) but that's that most important attribute you can bring to the position.
Good Luck and Congrats on getting the interview in this economy!

People person = great, of course and you should imply as such, but this isn't the 1990s or early 2000s anymore, that people person stuff doesn't wash when you go overboard with it all. Don't come across too sure of yourself, and don't be a cliche of a "people person". You should be able to get it to come across naturally with body language and relaxed confidence. Whatever you do don't say "I'm a team player", or "I work really well as a team" and all that, it sounds much better if you say you enjoy working with others and then say why, you can learn from them, and they can learn from you, it's more rewarding, it's satisfying to reach a goal with others and share the experience of success... Obviously adapt to the question, but the sentiment you give across needs to be a full figured one, not an anemic throw away remark that interviewers used to love 10-15 years ago for low paid directly dealing with customers type jobs. The problem is giving this relaxed sentiment doesn't come naturally until you get to 25-26 from my experience when you actually become a real adult (not being sarcastic here, it's true). Also, it's easy for young adults to come across egotistical because 1. they generally are, and 2. because there's a preconception that a young adult in a suit for example with well groomed hair talking like a "business man", is a bit of a fool. Whereas if you put that same gear on a 45-50 year old man, the egotistical aspect changes to a power aspect, which is always a plus. ...Anyways, you'll probs delete this too. ![]() Last thing just don't be over the top I'd say, by not doing that, it will differentiate you from the crowd, it's very easy to just sound like an entheusiastic cardboard cutout if you do go guns blazing with cheesy responses delivered with too much clarity, it will also open you up to come crashing down if you are then challenged with a sub-question you didn't expect and your confidence will show that you're one of the fakes. Remember that the other people being interviewed will be having the same feelings as you, so think of it all as beating them, you have a standard you are expected to come up to, that standard isn't perfection, the standard is likeable, confident, thoughtful and committed - most important - that you will be easy to get on with for your co-workers (which again goes back to the bit about not appearing too confident) Take it easy and calmly and you can't not get this types of jobs. From my experience of job applications and interviews, employers are looking for the dumbest and more unreliable people they can find. But hey maybe you will find a sensible employer.
