First of all gotta say great forum, been reading for the past few weeks taking in as much information as possible for when the PS3 arrives

Original 3.55 PS3 arrives tomorrow, hopefully should be hacked by tomorrow was looking for a bluray player at the time then saw this baby pop up at £130 on ebay with a 320GB hard-drive so couldn't resist

From what I've read so far rebug 4.2.1 looks like a popular choice, so that shall be my start point (obviously 3.55.3 rebug first )

Any recommend some homebrew software to start with?

Coming from a Xbox 360 to PS3.. so hopefully this machines better than that old thing.. doesn't make a week without displaying E74.

I'm happy to help anyone out if I have the knowledge to do so, so I'd appriciate the same back

do you know if that ps3 was downgraded to 3.55?
in case you want to update the firmware then you probably need to dehash?

don't ask me further about this, because i don't know shit.

Welcome to the club, most important thing to remember when you switch around custom firmware is never leave a disc inside when update cfw. It will use the disc before any storage media you could lose the ability to have some real fun.

As for homebrew, Multiman is a must, this will be your source for management, ripping backups,blu-ray, file managing, emulators. Basically everything you need to get started.

If you're planning to go online, expect the inevitable ban that Sony will dish out sooner or later. Unlike the 360 they ban both account and console, to reduce your chances, don't cheat. don't play leaked versions of games or simply stay offline.

If you have no interest in online whatsoever...go nuts.

Another thing you should do is start with cfw 3.55 get the Toggle QA flag pkg file. Enable QA flag, you can grab the file off of this site. This will be essential in minimizing bricks if you're going to jump from firmware to firmware...very handy.

I Could go on but it's best to take everything slowly and not kill yourself with information. They're great tutorials from @itskamel that should help you when you're ready.

Apparently it has only just been upgraded to 3.55.. Was on 3.05
for a while according to the previous owner - he never used it. Ill have a look round the forums and check out redash..

thanks! I have the Multiman software ready to be installed when the PS3 arrives - as well as rebug 3.55.3 - this one comes with the QA Flag within the Rebug toolbox right?

The PS3 should be a lot more interesting as I have the option to install different software, with the Xbox it was only the ability to play back ups.. so should be fun

Not really that bothered about online, enjoy playing the campaign / single players more (because I suck ) only game I ever played online was the call of duty series - as I've read on here I'll stay well away from BLOPSII, just keep that for the 360

You had the wrong kind of xbox then
I have a trinand trinity with LT 3.0.... RGH and Live in the same box with the ability to play backups on Live. IMO 360 is much better than a PS3 for homebrew but the ps3 community is like crack and I cant seem to stay away form it.

There are tutorials for installing MFW all over the site but I will break it down simply for you
3.55 OFW > 3.55 MFW > QA toggle/dehash > 4.xx MFW from the recovery menu

Regardless of whether or not you have a downgraded console it is still safest to go ahead and dehash

Oh I definately had the wrong Xbox, if it was RGH / JTAG possible I'd spend the money to fix the 360 still on LT2.0 due to non AP25 DVD drive

The method you have above is what I was going to do, just wasn't sure of the dehash part - so that's done with QA toggle? Hopefully the PS3 will be here today
