Thanks for your input throughout the thread. I really appreciate it!

Awesome. I did some research on this particular problem and narrowed it down to either that ribbon cable or the drive sensor BL1-012 (the chip with the switches that has the red/black wires.) Apparently the sensor is really sensitive to drops. In this case, maybe the package got tossed around too much

Gonna try out your ribbon cable first and hope that does it. If not, it has to be that sensor.

Will do. Yea that's how I'm doing it. A lot easier than trying to fit your fingers underneath the drive.

Just got the ribbon cable. Didn't work

Gonna probably try replacing the sensor in the picture below next

Out of curiosity what slim model do you have and does it have blue LEDs by the eject button?

Have you tried tampering with these switches?

from what i know, if your ps3 thinks there's a disc inside while there's nothing in, then the system will also hang.

there's a service pdf for the fat's drive, you could use it as a guideline?

i think those switches are for 8cm detection and 12 cm detection, not sure...

Where can I find this PDF?

I'm trying to figure out if the sensor is broken. I don't have a volt meter at the moment but the fact that it can turn on the PS3 by hitting those two switches makes think otherwise. Shouldn't the motor be spinning when I hit those two switches though?

Try hitting those two switches inside the drive and tell me what happens?
