Been through hell and back replacing the original compound on this one, had to go under the IHS of the GPU in an attempt to stop a crazy fan from going on high in 5 minutes. So right now I have arctic silver 5 under the IHS and then some HY-650 Gold Thermal Compound on top of the iIHS, got it from a ylod kit cause I ran out of AS5.

Added washers to apply pressure on the GPU yesterday since I suffered from greeen light of death (ps3 is on but no audio/video and controllers won't sync).
I'm thinking of removing the IHS on the CPU too and change paste there too since it seemed to have done the trick on the GPU but I'm not comfortable removing it but might have to since it's on RED 80C.
Might start with just adding washers though before attempting to remove the IHS on that one.
Sorry for the long rant.
if the temperature of your room is more than 34 c then its normal that the fan sopeed up and cpu temp get 80c

Ambient temp 24.4c
Model CECHH01
Replaced OEM paste with Arctic Silver 5
Running 3.55 KMEAW
Installed manual fan controller set to 40% est.
Standing vertically positioned running the game from disk and not from HDD

Idle Temp in MM
CPU 60c
GPU 53c

After 2 Hours of GTA IV by my son
CPU 63c
GPU 55c

Didn't see that coming. I had just prior to testing pulled the PS3 apart, replaced the thermal paste as stated with AS5 and replaced the thermal pads with 2.0mm replacements. I didn't see any real difference after replacing the paste and pads but I didn't really pay attention to the temps. I can't complain about the slight difference in temp. Can't really explain it either. There was not delay in recording the temps. Straight out of the game into MM.

CPUs and GPUs are technically designed to run constantly at high temps for prolonged periods of time.

Both of them being constantly at 80C isnt bad, they're just being used a lot.

The real problem is cooling. You dont want them to get too hot, and preferably the lower the temp the better.
And today a lot of electronics companies have gone to cheaper solder which doesnt hold up at high temps as much as the more expensive solder can. This is why we get the YLOD on PS3s and RROD on Xbox and why reflowing "fixes" the problem.

Of course reflowing isnt a fix, but finding better ways to cool the device is.
I recently saw a post about reballing, seems pretty time consuming and complex for some, but looks like if you can do it yourself then that is the best option.

Not installed the latest mmCM, or play much on my PS3 so not sure what temps mine runs at...

These are all taken idling in multiMAN for well over an hour:

CECH C03 - Feels like a hairdryer out back..

CPU - 65
RSX - 54

-----------------

CECH G03 - Hardly feel any air out back..

CPU - 78
RSX - 60

-----------------

CECH 2503B

CPU - 61
RSX - 62

I would love to what the fan speed is on shown in multiMAN or a seperate app, as I feel a false sense of 'security' just blindly staring at temps not knowing exactly how hard the fan is working to cool things.

I've redone the paste on CECH G one in last few days and get the same result as before temp wise. I did notice the psu was ridiculously hot when I ran it open, does this sit ontop of the cpu, and could it have adverse effect - i.e heat disperse back through metal work, thus not cooling aswell?

CECHL04
CPU: 58ºC RSX: 48ºC coldboot

after idling for awhile it goes up fast at arround
CPU: 68ºC RSX: 58ºC

added a PS3Z easy cool at default settings = 50%
dropped significant to CPU: 49ºC RSX: 36ºC -- Coldboot

idle for 20 min in Multiman
CPU: 57ºC RSX: 41ºC

CECH2004 with PS3Z mod
coldboot 41/37
multiman idle 20 min 45/42
20 min dirt3 46/44
idle 15 min 46/42
1080 mkv 20 min 46/42

heat dropped really nice after fanmod, a must

CECH-2504A, never opened, the console stands on a laptop cooling pad
Ambient temperature 20 °C
After playing NFS: MW for approximately 2 hours the temps were:
CPU: 70 °C
RSX: 72 °C
That's a bit high I think - it's probably due to a fact that the console doesn't have much free space around itself, it sits on a shelf next to other electronics...

Depends how you think about it. If you compare it to people who have applied some x paste, added many fans etc, then obviously it's gonna be a bit high. But imo this temp is totally normal, my laptop is running at 70-75C browsing web, like 90C if CPU usage goes up to 90%. And it works just fine like that. PS3 isn't much different..it's built to deal with heat. I'd would start worrying when you get 90C+ after 2-3 hours gaming on PS3. But probably it would even be okay with that, just like laptop. It's temps 100+ that are getting a bit high. Well..or thats how i like to think : P
