Errors 8002F147 and 8002F2C5 when updating a 40GB

Hey!

I just purchased a fat 40Gb (CECHG01) PS3 off Kijiji. Long story short; it wont update and only gives me error codes

According to system information I'm on Version 2.53.

When I try to update via XMB I get 8002F147. So a bit of searching the web many mentioned try updating it via the recovery menu, and from there I get 8002F2C5 and the console tries to restart. Tried reformatting the hard using the full format option, but that did not change anything

Tried searching both on here and Google but the error seems to occur to those who have installed 3.56v1, but I'm on 2.53

At the moment, I'm not trying to install any Custom firmware and hopefully restore it's update functionality.

Hope I've included enough info...
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried 3.55 Official firmware first?
and also is your blu ray drive working?

i would try installing 3.55 official firmware and see if that works. then upgrade to custom 3.55 from there.

Tried installing 3.55 Official firmware downloaded from the download section here, as well as from a game disc. Both attempts only got to 4% before giving me the error from XMB, other firmwares tested were 2.6 and 4.31

The bluray drive seems to be working; two games loaded and was playable, or is there a more extensive test I could perform?

Try formatting the HDD on a PC then putting it back in, and if that doesn't work, try another HDD.

I see you said it fails at 4%. Here is some info and a link to about how to fix the problem.
0%-40%
Cause: At this point the update is verifying and unpacking files from the .pup, then updating files on the NAND (and HDD for newer consoles with NOR flash). In 9/10 cases any failures at this point are due to a corrupt update file which happens pretty easily if it has been downloaded over a poor wireless network or poor connection in general. Otherwise in rare cases there could be a write failure to flash which I have NEVER witnessed.
Fixes:Download the latest update version and prep a USB stick into FAT32. It maybe a good idea to double check the MD5 of the file to be certain it is a 1:1 copy once downloaded. Place the update named 'PS3UPDAT.PUP' on the USB device inside the correct folders (for example: F:\PS3\UPDATE). Anywhere else and the PS3 will not see the file. Swap out the current hard drive in the PS3 for a spare one, it doesn't have to be formatted or anything like that as the PS3 will do it for you. Now you will have to turn the console on but instead of booting it normally, put it into recovery mode. For anyone who doesn't know how to do that: hold the power button until the console turns on then off again, take your finger off and hold it down again so the console turns on again then wait for it to beep twice in quick succession before removing your finger. The console should then ask for you to connect a controller via cable and press the PS button. Once in recovery mode put your USB stick in any port and then choose the 'System Update' option. It will format, prepare and hopefully install the update without any further error.
SOURCE Make sure to go to the source, to find out more on how to get your update installed. Good luck.

Appreciate the link!

It gave me the same error when installing 3.55 the from a game disc (game being Final Fantasy 13) which, hopefully, shouldn't contain a corrupted update file and tried downloading 4.31 from the US Playstation site twice and trying to update through XMB and restore menu.

Say if I were to format the Harddrive on my computer, which file system do I opt for and will there be any (more) negative impact on the system?

It doesn't matter. I prefer formatting to NTFS on PC but PS3 formats the HDD on connection on it's special file system.

You can also try to install firmware in service mode with a jig and ps3updat.pup + lv1diag files

I cant see anywere were it says that youve try'd updating via a storage media device ?
I have a 40gb fat ps3 that i use for online play only and a slim 500gb jailbroke. One time I turned on my 40gb to find nothing was happening and that the hdd had become corrupted somehow, So what i did was (after alot of the same stuff thats been happening to you) I took my ps3 outside into the garage were its really cold and updated via a usb flash drive, I just started it normally and updated via usb, Then success , it did its thing then it booted up and was fine apart from the cooling fan comes on alot sooner. You'll find that if you leave your ps3 on all the time and have it sat next to stuff that gives off heat like a TV or sat on top of a blue ray or dvd or sat box it can damage alot of the stuff inside. Give my thing a try but do it somewere cold and let the ps3 get good an chilled for 40 mins before you start, It may very well suprise you...

Can please elaborate on this, or point me towards a guide on how to update using that method? Will I lose bluray functionality if I do it like that?

So far, I've attempted to update via wired internet, multiple attempts with a couple USB drives in both XMB and recovery mode to no avail

I know that freezing a broken harddrive allows you to get some data off it from personal experience and word of mouth, might just entertain that idea... I mean, can't hurt to try .
