If you want a second opinion, feel free to grab a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer and test it. To be honest though, I'm certain it will tell you the same thing.

I know the odds seem low, but it's possible the new hard drive is a dud. The only other way to tell would be to run a diagnostic on both hard drives in another machine that's known to be fault free. If both were ok (very unlikely), then it would be the hard disk controller on the faulty laptop that's the culprit, which would mean the motherboard would need to be replaced. The reason I really believe it's the hard drive is SMART reporting and logging is internally controlled by the hard drive itself and not the hardware it's installed into. I was a technician for 3 years for a company that did the warranty repairs for all Acer notebooks in the UK and I'm A+ certified in both hardware and software (not to mention I have a Bachelor's in computer science from the University of Washington in Seattle).

Nope. Even a netbook that doesn't have an optical drive (and some don't have wifi) won't fail a SMART test. SMART is specific to hard drives only. If you're going to test the drive, use a diagnostic tool from the manufacturer of the hard drive (check the label for this). Or in your BIOS, the hard drive will have a two letter brand code (most notably WD for Western Digital, ST for Seagate, HT for Hitachi, etc..). If you can't get into Windows to run it, you can make a bootable USB flash drive and use a DOS copy of the diagnostic to run from it.

Edit: I know it's just wiki, but this is a pretty good explanation of what the SMART test is. It gets pretty technical, but it pretty much explains it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

Well, you can't determine a hard drive make just by the model of laptop it's installed in. Alot of laptop manufacturers use different brands of hard drives and optical drives. Just look on the label of the hard drive itself. It'll have the brand right on it. If the hard drive passes a SMART test in another machine and fails in the faulty one, then it's the hard disk controller of the motherboard (which is the last thing you want).

Edit: That's a Fujitsu hard drive, so Hitachi diagnostics are best for it. Grab the drive fitness test from here and put it on a bootable DOS USB stick or CD and run it from there.

Do both hard drives pass on the Compaq and fail on the Dell? If that's the case, then yeah, it's gonna be the motherboard. You'll need to know specs of it in order to get an exact replacement. Some are UMA and others are discrete. UMA means onboard video and discrete have a separate video card. You'll also want to make sure the new one has all the same ports in all the same places. Easiest way to be sure is to get the part number from the current motherboard (there's usually a sticker on the board, most likely under the RAM modules). Otherwise, you can search for the right one using the part number of the notebook itself.

Well, you'll need more than just the model number. To give an example, my wife's laptop is a Toshiba L300D, however, hers is specifically an L300D-202. The second portion of that specifies which exact model of it she has. Since Toshiba makes numerous models of the L300 (as you can see here) in both Intel and AMD board sockets as well as different GPU and port configurations, it's vital to know the exact laptop model. Be sure to get all the info from the sticker on the bottom of the notebook, which will have more info than your manual or a model name from the top of the notebook.
