PS3 isn't much different..it's built to deal with heat. I'd would start worrying when you get 90C+ after 2-3 hours gaming on PS3. But probably it would even be okay with that, just like laptop. It's temps 100+ that are getting a bit high. Well..or thats how i like to think : P
The problem is that we're talking about PS3 here and I highly doubt that it could resist temps of 90+ °C - I haven't even seen anyone with temps like that... I don't say that the temps of my PS3 are too high, but they are high compared to people with the same model and stock compound/no mods done.

My slim CECH2501A runs about 62 C right after a few hours of a gaming sesh .. Doesn't get higher than that really.. . New thermal paste was applied. Stable temp after around a 10 hour mix of games/showtime/ then idle is 55 Celsius.

CBEH1000 reflowed and AS5 paste. Full chip surface application.
2 computer box fans sealed onto the rear of the PS3 pulling air out (externally powered). I also snipped out the grills on the PS3 for wide open unrestricted airflow.

room temp 75F

Running idle
CPU: 148 to 162F (varies)

Running Idle with Hard Drive cover off:
CPU: 142F to 158F

Running idle with external fans removed:
Internal fan does work fine.
CPU: 178F or more (I went to shut it down once it hit the 180 mark)

GPU: Always 10F to 12F lower than what the CPU reads.

I tried an experiment for the heck of it since I have a few PS3s..
I cut out a hole on the bottom of the PS3 matching the fan opening (thought was to draw cold air instead of partially recycled internal air.)

Discovered that the entire metal case of the motherboard relies on air flow that comes through the vents and pulled over it then through the bottom of the unit. Hence my temp findings on not having the hard drive door on.
This test/mod was not good. I do not recommend it. I since undid this mod.
With the external fans, the CPU temp stayed the same as previous steps, but I think I overheated other parts of the system to an unusable thermal state. It slowed down and froze off and on.

As of me typing this I am looking for where the temp settings are in the newest MM or how to get them back. I installed a new HD and did a fresh install of latest. Not able to find this util now and just started looking around the forums. I got distracted with this thread.

This utility is a good thing to those who know what they are doing with it.
Also to those that DO have a system that runs too hot and forces them to reflow due to heat issues. It is nice to know where one is at for temp to avoid issues.

Do you gripe to PC makers that Bios utils shouldn't have temp readings?
Withholding knowledge and resources is not a good thing.
If one is obsessed with their thermal safety of their equipment, whats it matter to you?

My slim 2502 (I think that's what it is) ran at 60°c idle for 10 mins.
A bit under 70°c when playing Tekken Tag 2 for 20 mins.
Put some MX-2 paste on and it now idles at 40-43°c haven't tested with a game yet but obviously would be better.
This app/function is something I've always wanted and I'm very glad its out
My PC runs at 20-24°c (6 fans) gotta love cold running machines

Instead of me started a new thread, I'm wandering what temps you guys are getting with the recent release of Etswald's Control Fan Utility when using mode 2 that allows you to manually set the speed for preference?

I was doing some testing, and @ PayLoad setting, I'm getting about 10 °C lower temp. Was running up to 79 °C, now doing 69 °C, which is way better. Haven't tested on Manual speed, but I'm sure I could get it a few °C cooler.

My PS3 (which is the 60gb cecha01) seems to always be around 60-71c for the CPU, and around 55-65c for the GPU. When the CPU hits 70-72c, the fan kicks up and the temp decreases. I don't think it gets too much hotter than that when gaming, which leaves me to conclude this is normal for the system. I did a thermal paste on it as well.
