Should your drive spin all the time if there is a disc inserted?
Even if you're not playing anything? Getting various reports from Google. Seems to work fine otherwise.

I would have thought so, because isn't the point to be able to stream data off the disc constantly rather than have to instal onto the internal.
Obviously some games DO make a mandatory instal to internal. If running off USB though, I would think the game spins up to verify and then spins down as it comes off the HDD. Could be wrong

If there's a disk in the drive it will spin when accessed obviously, but it will stay spinning for a good 5-10 minutes on the XMB at least. So from PS3 start up, it will be spinning for at least 5 mins I have noticed (my minutes might not be 60 seconds long though as I don't carry a stopwatch and a baseball cap round with me).
Haven't bothered to check in game specifically for this post, I'm not feeling that nice today

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to insert a disc and leave it spinning for longer. I'll let you know what happens.

Even with just a DVD inserted it has been spinning at full speed for over 5 mins with the XMB just sitting idle. I'm sure I would have noticed that before.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* Stopped spinning after about 10 mins of it's own accord. It's reading discs so I'm going to assume that's it fixed. Thanks for the replies and thoughts to all concerned. |
