20GB Fat PS3

I need to re-flow power to my Fat PS3 Blue Ray Drive some how. I have a Fat PS3 that is not giving off enough power to my blu ray drive at least i think. The reason why i know its not getting enough power is that when i put two ps3 next to each other and switch the cable the 1 black and 3 gray with another fat ps3, the blu ray drive works fine. So instead of the cable plug directly to the board of my ps3 its plug to my second ps3 board. I was thinking about getting the power form the PS3 power supply but i think it maybe to much power? and i don't know how to re wire it. I do have some knowledge of electronic and soldering skills. Any help would be grateful.

@077407 , you are nothing but a number on the forum.

the cable pinout:

1. black: 12V
2. grey : ground (0V)
3. grey : ground (0V)
4. grey :+5V

as you can see there's still a little electronic between the 12V and 5V line, there's a good chance a part is damaged.
if you can find the TH6001 and TH6002 (thermal resistors), and you have a good stable power there, then you could bypass the rest of the circuit.

the power to the drive is switched somehow, don't know why, because after a couple of minutes i still measure power at my own drive.

but the bottom line is you can bypass the power lines.

I did this myself before, but it's been a while, so test things first in case I made a mistake. I shorted out the power to the bluray drive trying to do a fan mod so thats why I did this.

You need to find the 12v wire. If I remember correctly, one of the big spikey plugs on the motherboard that the PSU plugs into is 12v. You need to connect your bluray to that. I'll check this to make sure I'm right once I can get home. Maybe get you some pics.

so all i would need to do is take the black wire and connect it to the positive end of the spiky plugs on motherboard? If i remember correctly i did do a voltage check to see of the pins on the motherboard for the blu ray drive is giving off power, i remember one of the end pin was around 11-12v and the middle was about 4-6v.

Mr.Dutch, so what you are saying is that if i find the TH6001 and TH6002 and i connect the wire directly to the thermal resistors right? Just want to make sure i doing it correctly.

Thanks for all the help, will test this out once i get home

if he get the wires behind the thermal resistors then it's still sort of protected, soldering to the prongs means unprotected.

@077407 , don't know if the 20GB ps3 looks a bit like the 60GB's board.

TH6002 is at the other side of the board, close to the connector's position.

did you measured the voltage to see what the problem was?

black = 12V
grey = 0V
grey = 0V
grey = 5V

"if it aint broken, don't fix it"

if there would be a bad connection in the ground wires, and you would solder the 12 and 5V, you would not fix the problem.

measuring the voltages when the drive is on should expose the problem?

the last time i measured it i don't remember getting 0v for the two middle grey cable, so what if the two ground wires are bad, can i connected to something else for ground? I cannot find my multimeter reader, will have to buy a new one to test the two middle cable for voltage.
