Ps3 turns off after a few seconds

Hey guys I need advice, my mate was given a ps3 that turns its self off after a few seconds of turning it on, he has checked the power supply and the power light turns green when he turns it on and then it turns red as it turns off, he thinks the guy who gave it him screwed up jailbreaking it, so does this sound like a screwed up hack and do you think it can be fixed?

When you power it on, can you maybea acces to XMB? Or it shut down after 3-4 sec?

Couse if you can get to XMB, then your PS3 get overheat, you should open it and clean and change thermal paste, if you cant get to XMB, it could be YLOD, or not good downgraded PS3 or corrupted with some wrong update.

I wouldn't try a reflow repair until you determine whether or not it is semi bricked or not

That is true, but maybea he have some old NAND console model, then chance to YLOD would be bigger.

What is the model #?

If it is a Nor model, you can solder a wire from the nor tristate to a ground point (vss) on the motherboard. If the console stays on with no video or hdd activity, then it is a problem with the flash.
If it does the same thing, then it is a hardware problem somewhere else. Most likely the stanard YLOD, would need a reflow for temp fix. Or a reball for permanent fix.

I am not sure how to do this on Nand models though.

If the lights flash from green > yellow/orangeish color > blinky red light. Thats the YLOD and could be many things. Ie. A internal issue, solder broke on chips causeing them to not connect with motherboard, thermal paste has expired etc.

My guess and money is on that its the thermal paste and solder joints, as Sony has gotten cheaper and cheaper with the stuff, they use non lead based solder wich cracks faster and there paste is just low grade crap, all that so they make you send in your console for repair to them for 160$, and they just replace cheap stuff with cheap stuff it's a endless cycle. If you know how to REBALL (as thats the more permanent fix opposed to a reflow) then do that and replace Sony's cheap a$$ paste with some Arctic silver. If you don't, call some local computer repair stores or electronic repair shops and see if they have the stuff to do so. I called local places to get mine fixed and it cost me only 35$ , instead of shipping it to one of those ylod repair sites for 90-180$
