And I also had the 3.5 drive as internal as at the time of my hard drive upgrade there was literally only one 2.5" 1TB drive that would fit in the PS3. And I also liked that the heat from the hard drive would not dissipate into the PS3 if it was outside the system

Finally, just to be perfectly clear to anyone else reading my previous post, I'm not criticizing Rogero in any way as I'm very pleased with his cfw.
Yea i always thought about hooking up the internal outside the ps3 to help with heat. So do you think the issue is with just 3.5 drives as internal on 4.xx as maybe a 2.5 hooked up on the outside of the ps3 would work which doesnt really make sense but i dont know.

Yes that's what I mean.

An update - The touro 1TB drive works perfectly (no spindown/power saving crap)...

However I got a faulty one and it started rattling, new one on the way...

(Works fine though, it's the only drive I'd recommend above 500GB 2.5inch to be mounted internally).

It's not as fast as the old drive, of course, because it's only 2.5inch so stuff does take noticeably longer to load....but it's not like there's any other option, so I'm happy

I got it from Amazon.co.uk at that price but it's since gone up in price, however ebuyer.co.uk are doing it for £54.99, which is still a very good price for a 1TB 2.5 inch drive.

You can then use the enclosure for another 2.5inch drive, and it's a USB3.0 enclosure, so all said and done...can't really complain.

I made a thread on this, and nobody offered me any help except sarcastic twatty remarks, have a look.

I tested ALL 4.xx CFW firmware, it all exhibits the same problem, I downgraded and upgraded countless times, all with same results, format drive in computer/fix filesystem in recovery/rebuild database/so on and so on

Nothing worked.

It's got nothing to do with the drive being mounted externally and all todo with the fact it's a 3.5 inch drive...god knows what though. (I verified this by using my SATA cables to mount the 2.5 inch drive externally)

Well thats good to know. Im suprised this isnt a popular thing to do. As we know the number one enemy is heat. And besides the power source i would think the hdd is the hottest part of the ps3. I know my laptop gets the hottest right where the hdd is.

So from your tests a 2.5 hooked up externally via SATA will work just like its inside the ps3 right? Does the hdd need its own power source when its outside?

I just tried to attach my WD Scorpio Black 750GB 2.5" drive with just the sata adapter cable outside the PS3 and I got a message that no attached storage device or some such was found. So it didn't work without the power cable plugged in as well. Now that think about it, I don't think sata has the same capability to power a drive like usb...correct me if i'm wrong.

About the high heat concern, I pulled the caddy holding the drive in the PS3 as soon as I turned it off and found the WD hard drive barely warm to the touch so I guess it will stay a true "internal" drive from now on; as heat is a non-issue. Besides, with all the cables coming off of the Ps3 it looked like it was on life support or something. Time for a cleaner and more organized look. Just as well, the wife just looks behind the TV and says, "I'm not dusting any of that, your responsibility."

Yea i didnt think it would work. And yea i imagine it looks a little crazy!

I had one more question. Not that im going to do it, but if is it possible to just switch 2 internals back and forth if there both on cfw 4.xx.

Sure you could. I've done it when I was on 3.55 kmeaw and got a RSOD while trying to enable a spoofer to 4.11. Good thing I had a backup hard drive on the same cfw to go to otherwise I would need to reinstall everything from scratch. I only did it once though to get a working PS3 again after the RSOD and I wouldn't do it constantly as your saves and trophy's would be all out of whack. Although I'm sure I could have popped in a fresh drive and formatted but, again, I would have to reinstall everything from scratch. Always good to have a back-up of some sort

Edit: On thinking about it a little longer, I guess you could use two hard drives with the same firmware if you backed up your saves to an external drive and then loaded that save from the other drive. But I don't know how Sony's servers would react to syncing to a different hard drive. But if it was the same user profile it should work. Don't know really. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Definitely doesn't work with a 3.5' 1Tb WD Green in an external box (power saving drive). Getting boot error unless I fiddle with the power on the drive and reboot.
No issue when I was on Rogero 4.30 v1, only getting it now with v2.04
